Indications are the Tennessee Titans’ first face-to-face meeting with Cam Ward at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis went well on Wednesday, a league source said.
Ward, the University of Miami quarterback, who is a possibility to be the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, which the Titans hold, made a solid first impression with Titans brass during their formal 18-minute get-to-know-each-other session.
The Titans also met a second time with Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders on Wednesday, after having first spoken with him at the East-West Shrine Game back in January.
While first impressions on Ward seemed positive, there is still a lot of vetting to be done regarding Ward, Sanders or any other prospect who could be chosen first overall in this draft. The Titans coaches, front office and scouts in the coming months will need to get to know Ward and other prospects on a higher level and find out more about his personality, work ethic and ability to process and learn.
Sanders has already decided that he will not throw or do any drills at the Combine this week, while Ward remains undecided, but could also wait for his pro day on March 24 to work out.
The Titans are also likely to bring both Ward and Sanders in as part of their 30-player visits allowed by the league and could schedule a private workout as well. Tennessee currently has only Will Levis under contract at quarterback and could be poised to draft a quarterback with the first pick or wait and take a developmental prospect later in the draft. Among the quarterbacks expected to be available in later rounds include Will Howard, Jalen Milroe, Jaxson Dart, Kyle McCord, Tyler Shough, Quinn Ewers, Riley Leonard and Seth Henigan. Adding a veteran quarterback through free agency or a trade is also a viable option for the Titans this off-season.
