I think the best approach is to not expect him at all and then be pleasantly surprised if he does flip. These don’t usually go our way, so not getting my hopes up, but we do have Mario, so you never know.

the dad is probably trying to keep the bama dogs off him. once bama turns up the pressure it is very enticing and hard to say no. the dad is probably helping his son by making statements about Bama. imagine your 17/18 year old kid committed to the champs and #1 team and you are wavering and the amount of pressure that then is upon him? the text, the phone calls, etc..
