2021 DE Donell Harris Commits

I don't think any of us (or the coaching staff, for that matter) 100% trusts that the commit will stick until that year's NSD. However, you take the commitment when the kid gives it or you can **** sure guarantee that the kid will hold it against us going forward. You can also be sure that another program WILL take his commitment and then they'll use the fact that we initially denied him against us as we try to claw our way back in the kid's good graces.
In today's cut-throat recruiting environment you don't turn down any advantage when it's presented to you or you risk the chance of it turning into a disadvantage somewhere down the road..

Is it a real advantage?

I hear recruits talking about the first school showing them love. And then they want more love. And then more love.

And then I see them treating that first school as a fallback. Base chick is locked in, why wouldn't I look around?

IMO I don't think first offers matter much anymore, unless you have few other offers. The real fight is at the end. If the "we were first" carries weight then, so be it.

It's 3 years out. Him committing and basically calling you his leader just means that you have the advantage over all other teams at that point in time. My greater point is that we should not turn a situation that is a positive into a negative by needlessly denying the kid's commitment just because we're going to have to fight off other teams for the next 3 years in order to ultimately win his signature.
Honestly, what harm does it do to accept his commitment 3 years out, 5 years out or even 10 years out for that matter? I just don't understand why this is even a debate, quite honestly. You accept his commitment and there's no harm done to you in any way. You deny the kid merely because you feel like you're going to have to fight to keep him and you risk turning a definite positive development into a potentially negative one. What would be the point in doing that?

Edit: In your post I realize that you're talking about the value of a commitment this far out and not whether or not we SHOULD accept a commitment from a kid from the '21 class.

I'm no expert bro! just don't trust taking a commitment this early.
You’ll trust 2 years from now when Saban is calling this kid for an OV, Richt is locking up these kids early, he’s going to win with them & use them to establish recruiting pipelines in SF schools & communities, like what Harley is doing now with STA, a power move like this can pay off dividends in the long run, chess not checkers.

And let's not forget these kids can hopefully take on a leadership role like we had in 2018 class. Really need that to happen early and it looks like 2020 has some guys already who can step up and take this on

Future 5 Star. Was keeping tabs on him since the end of last season. He showed out at The Miami Opening Regional, had a great performance last night at Paradise. We have an interview with him coming soon.

What's the likelihood this kid stays committed for 3 years?

Probably better than you'd think. Kid and his family are hard core Canes' fans. Dad would love nothing more than to see his boy run out of that smoke donning the UM orange & green. Obviously, a lot can happen between now and signing day 2021, but I think there's a very good shot of signing this kid when the time comes.
