2020 Recruiting.

Given that Jaquan Newton and Lonnie Walker came from that Team Final AAU program, Miami should be in a good spot with him but they still need to close the deal.

Lane will visit Miami on the same weekend as Earl Timberlake. That would be a really good perimeter tandem if they commit to Miami.

Interesting takes on a few recruits per the article:

NC State will bring to campus two of its commits and is attempting to turn two official visitors into Wolfpack pledges, as well.
Nick Farrar committed to the program earlier this month, while junior guard Terquavion Smith did the same earlier this year. Top in-state products,
Dontrez Styles, JaDun Michael, Zaharee Maddox and Carter Whitt will be on campus, as will top-25 junior Quincy Allen. Those players will be taking unofficial visits to the ACC program. However, most of the attention will be focused on John Hugley and Deivon Smith. NC State received their first official visits, but are in the best spot for Smith. He will visit Louisville next weekend and the prevailing thought is that the Wolfpack and Cardinals will vie for his signature, which will likely come in November. For Hugley, Miami and Pittare two to keep an eye on, though NC State has picked up ground in recent weeks.

Jeff Capel
is hoping this fall will be different than last year, when the Panthers came up short with a number of their top targets. They did find a way to finish the year out strong, but it came with great anxiety. That anxiety could be erased this time around with pledges from players on campus this weekend. Cliff Omoruyi, a top 60 prospect, will take an unofficial visit to Oakland. Pitt has been connected with Omoruyi often, but the Panthers remain in catch-up mode. Earl Timberlake will be on an official visit. No one has a great feel with where he's leaning, but the Panthers have developed a great rapport with the versatile wing. Visits will likely be taken to Alabama, Miami, North Carolina and Seton Hall, and Providence and South Carolinaalso remain involved. The likeliest visitor to commit is Noah Collier, who is down to a final three and would be the ideal, run-and-jump 4-man for Capel and his staff. Cal and Clemsonare also in the mix take to land his services.

7. WEST VIRGINIA

West Virginia already sits with the commitment of four-star big man Isaiah Cottrell, and it will attempt to add another to its frontcourt this weekend. The top in-state prospect that will take a prep year this fall, Jalen Bridges, begins his official visit tour. The Fairmont native will make the short drive to Morgantown and get an even better feel for what the Big 12 program has to offer. Miami and Xavier are the two to beat for Bridges, who has four other official visits scheduled for the fall before a signing is made in November. Bridges could definitely warm up to the in-state program, but
Tajj Thweatt is the more likely player to commit. The three-star forward out of New Jersey is down to a final four that also includes Florida, Penn Stateand Temple. Could the Mountaineers be on commitment watch this weekend? They are in a very good spot with the athletic and tough-nosed forward, and will be doing their best to double their 2020 class before Monday arrives.

So Miami leads with Bridges and Hugley while Timberlake has everyone guessing and some still believe Ware is going to Kentucky even though an official visit has not been scheduled. Not bad at all for Miami. Time to close the deal.

I am not surprised as I always thought he was going to West Virginia. He has a travel basketball teammate (Oscar Tshiebwe) that will be a freshman at WVU and Jalen was originally in the 2019 class but he had previously planned to go to prep school and enroll in 2020. I guess he changed his mind and I guess Miami did not want him in the 2019 class. Interesting but I am only reading between the line.

What are our chances of getting the players listed? Could give us an " Crystal Canes-Hoop Ball" my brother @Da_Lucky_One ? lol

My Fav: I really hope we get these 3 somehow ? -Scottie Barnes, Andres Curbelo, Earl Timberlake .

I appreciate the insight and the tabs on UM hoops .🏀:neonu:🙌:stormwarningflag-sm:

I had played back in the day both football and ball... It was actually my first love. lol

Only person in my school to hold * Class 6A State Honors in three categories in Football, Basketball, Baseball.
I like to keep tabs on UM ball as well. I'm just as passionate watching our boys play just as I'm watching football.
Fairly new on here but i'm glad I found this gem to discuss ball from time to time . Here's to a great season and our March hopefully back to the Sweet 16'.

Be bless and Go Canes!

Welcome to the group and we are glad to have you here with us.

This is my best guess (I don't claim to be an expert) at the Miami 2020 recruiting class. Currently, Miami has 4 available scholarships for next season but I think (hope and wish) Nysier Brooks gets a waiver to play this season. That would give Miami 5 scholarships for the 2020 class.

As of September 9th, I would say Miami gets PG Andre Curbelo, SG Neils Lane, SF Earl Timberlake, PF Matt Cross or PF Scottie Barnes, PF Lance Ware or C John Hugley or C Cliff Omoruyi. I know, I cheated.

Things change so fast it is hard to make a good guess. I feel good about Curbelo because he is from Puerto Rico and Miami has a cultural and geographical advantage. Neils played with Team Final, the same program that produced Jaquan Newton and Lonnie Walker for Miami. Miami recruits the DMV well so I feel good about Timberlake as he is keeping information close to the chest like Bruce Brown did. Matt Cross played for BABC, which is the same travel program that Bruce Brown played with. Cross wants to play the 3 but Coach L sees him as a 4. I don't know why he cannot do both in positionless basketball. I feel better once kids set an official visit date and come to Miami. It is hard to say no to Miami when you are on campus.

What we should also factor in to the equation is that Chris Lykes and Kam McGusty will probably test the NBA draft process to get information on where they will get drafted. I am not saying they will turn pro, I am only saying they will go through the process to gather information then make their decision.

Scottie Barnes is the crown jewel of the class but he will wait until April or May to sign so it will be an interesting waiting game with him. Is it worth the risk, absolutely even though he will only be at Miami for one season. Miami really needs to get more local kids on the team.

South Florida has alot of talented kids in the next few recruiting classes (2021-23) and some of those guys need to wear the Canes uniform.

In post# 239, Kyle Liburd informed us that Matt Cross wants to play the 3 in college while Coach L and staff sees him as a 4. Probably a stretch 4 like Sam Wardenburg. I have read in multiple post that Miami and Indiana are the predicted leaders but Indiana just go a commitment from their third perimeter player in the 2020 recruiting class. Apparently, Coach L is not the only coach who sees Matt as a 4. The second article predicts a commitment from Matt Cross in the next 10 days so things should be looking good for Miami given the process of elimination.

Of course, he could pick some other school and this would mean nothing. Let's wait and see how this plays out.

Thank you brother @Da_Lucky_One for analysis ... This is Gold!!!🏅 I agree we need more locals on the UM squad. I was disappointed in Mr. Carey in the decision he made. He could of build a legacy and held the torch here . Miami is becoming a hotbed destination for basketball. I met someone who runs the Miami Hoop Hall invitational. He did say that the City of Miami has a chance to become a factory just like Football and Baseball. You have a lot of legendary high school coaches relocating down because of great weather to coach these talent along with a lot of transfers in international kids. Plus it helps that some these local basketball players are getting exposure of its own because of the travel teams that come down to play in the summer.Very interesting on Lykes and McGusty . I like to see more of Bev , Wong Walker, Deng in lineups to see what we have in the future of UM basketball. I think this will play a role in what these recruits see in our style of play.

I could not agree with you more. I wish people would realize that Miami is more than just a football school. Yes, football is big in the state of Florida but the other sports are quickly catching up. Baseball is still good while soccer, tennis and basketball are improving every year.

The University of Miami should be good in every sport due to the talented kids in the state of Florida. Basketball is only two good recruiting classes away from something special. I agree with you about Vernon Carey, I was hoping he would be the Melvin Bratton or Alonzo Highsmith of the Miami basketball program. Unfortunately, it did not happen with him but that does not mean it will not happen.

I mentioned it in the Italy exhibition thread that the freshman (Wong, Beverly and Walker) should give Miami 20 to 30 points per game this season if Coach L puts them on the floor. Miami has enough talent to win 20 plus games as the keys are depth (health), defense and rebounding. If all 11 guys are healthy and eligible then I see no reason why Miami will not finish in the top 4 of the ACC this season. Scoring should not be a problem for this group as long as they play a little more uptempo basketball.

Speaking of local talent, if Coach L would start getting a few players from the NightRydas Elite and Team Breakdown along with the way he recruits the kids from Pennnsylvania, DMV and the Northeast then Miami will be a consistent top 15 basketball team every year.

Booom! @Da_Lucky_One Dead On bro! str8 shot!🏹

🏎 Let these freshman play more run and gun and recruit more in South Florida Regions . 🌱

Also would like to see more basketball uni combos, team apparel , advertising etc.. Level Up with Adidas. This attracts more ball players more so the football players . (Most of Football players just want to play the game) (Most of basketball players just want to look fly for the ladies while playing the game .) LOL

Those things will help build the Miami basketball brand around the state but Miami also needs to play more in-state schools in the non-conference schedule. Miami needs to be more visible in the Tampa and Orlando areas. Also, playing Florida in the Orange Bowl Classic as an annual event is long overdue. These are all missed opportunities to grow the program.

Who knew that balmy winter breezes, the ocean, palm trees, attractive people, great academics, beautiful campus, a cozy on-campus arena, respected head coach, and membership in a premier basketball league could all be such a hard sell around the country?

I have always thought the same thing. That was always the first clue Miami has normally hired the wrong coach for its basketball team. Granted, contacts and connections are important along with in-state talent but there are more pros than cons when it comes to the University of Miami.

IMO.

I think that's putting it mildly. Coach L has been our most successful recruiting HC to date but ... gotta think he is just scratching the surface in terms of what could/should be! I wonder if he would agree?

I don't care how much tradition you have, it would be hard to convince me to come to Lawrence, KS or Chapel Hill, NC when I could be in Coral Gables, FL. I will always pick destination over tradition. I don't care whose uniform is hanging in the rafters.

Well, having been to both of the campus locations you mention, gotta say Chapel Hill is very charming and a beautiful campus/great facility but Lawrence is a mystery. Nothing to do or see there.

First of all, what makes you think UF wants to play UM annually? They don't. The only in state schools that we can play that really matters is UF and FSU. We are also playing in the Orlando tourney and do every 3 years

How can you ask someone a question and answer it yourself. That is just plain rude. In reverse, how do you know they don't? I will not be rude to you and say they do. Let's look to the football team. One neutral site game and now we have a home and home series with Florida.

Remember, if it don't make dollars then it don't make sense. Miami vs Florida makes money so it will happen.

The tournament in Orlando is an ESPN sponsored tournament and Miami only plays in it once every 5 years. The other sites are Charleston, SC, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and Fresno, CA. That is the rotation of the tournament sites. We are talking apples and oranges here.

Just to clarify, Miami should play UCF and USF every year in a home and home series. Before you say it will not work..... Miami is already playing UCF in a home and home this season. STOP. WAIT.

BREATHE......Thank you.
