2017 team vs. 2024 team

This logic makes no sense

You guys better not have any posts talking about how we routinely lose games to inferior ACC opponents if you wanna start throwing around absolutes like this

The 2024 team is fresh in our memories

I think if we transported ourselves back to right after we **** all over ourselves against Pitt (who was what 4-6 at the time?) and then got rag dolled by Clemson we would probably be pretty dramatic about that team

Especially when Rosier came out and said he didn’t take the Pitt game seriously

That's true. However, didn't Rosier get hurt in the game and we had lost Ahmond and Herndon already. The injuries had pilled up by the time we played Pitt. I'm mainly looking through a lens of both teams over the course of the full year. Not just the last game.

Fair

I don’t have the heart to passionately debate this because the end result is tragic anyway

2017 Canes finished 10-3 (ACC runner up) ranked #13 in the final poll

2024 Canes currently 10-2, ranked #12 in the CFP poll.

Right now, it’s definitely debatable.

You guys have bad memories.

The large majority of the 2017 run was generated by pure luck.

Once the luck ran out, they crashed head-on collision style into a brick wall.

They could only put up 2 scores on Pitt & the 2nd TD didn't come until literally the last minute left in the game. In the 3rd quarter, we had 6 straight Offensive drives they resulted in a Punt.

Yall forgot when Kurt Benkert & Logan Woodside put up 340+yds on that 2017 Defense. Cam would moonwalk & 🤭🫳 all over the 2017 squad.

Yes, the 24 Defense sucks, but they did shut down UF & Wake Forest due to their bad QB play. Rosier wouldn't be able to keep up with Cam.

2024 Canes - 48
2017 Canes - 17

Going to have to disagree with you there. I think Richt did a pretty good job on maximizing the things the team did well and hiding the flaws. Luck played a part, but we were in a position to benefit from good luck because of good coaching. I think Richt intended to have the offense go through Mark Walton at the start of the season. Rosier wasn’t going to be asked to do much as he had limited ability. Walton’s injury forced Richt to open up the offense more and he did a good job scheming up offense that gave Rosier a lot of easy throws and chances to pick up yards with his legs.

The defense was the strength of the team so complimentary football was to limit our turnovers, don’t put the D in bad field position, and plan for the defense to force turnovers. We were basically tied for second for most defensive turnovers in cfb (#2 team forced 2.5, 3-4 teams including UM forced 2.4). The D gave the offense extra opportunities so even if we didn’t have a dynamic offense, it would get extra opportunities to score. 2024 team is better than 2017 because of the lack of firepower, but I don’t think it’s fair to say the team relied on luck anymore than the 2024 team did.

TrumpyCane thinks some of you forget how horrific that 2017 offense was at times, people think of the VT/ND games but forget about the FSU, GT, UNC, Pitt, and Clemson games

2024 team doesn’t lose by 30 to anyone
How many games did the 2024 team play down to our opponents thus making the game a dogfight?

I'd go 2024.

People seem to have forgotten how bad Malik was. He had a few decent moments, like our 2024 D did against Wake. But he had a mental block when it came to throwing over the middle. Its hard to pick on our terrible safeties when the opposing QB doesn't throw in their direction.

What if.. the 2024 team had 2017's D? Do we win it all?
Yes! Put the 2017 or 2018 defense with the 2024 offense and we would definitely compete for the title!

The 2017 Canes averaged 29 points per game.

They had 8 games where they scored less than 30 points.

The 2024 Canes literally had ONE game scoring less than 30.

The 2017 Canes could not & would not be able to keep up with the 2024 Canes.

Yall are really overvaluing that Defense.

Toledo - 429yds
FSU - 406yds
Syracuse - 399yds
UNC - 428yds
UVA - 439yds
Wisconsin - 400yds

Not one of those teams had an Elite QB.
Clemson put up 38 on that 2017 Defense in the ACC Championship game with Kelly Bryant at QB... Not Trevor Lawrence. Not Deshaun Watson. Not Tahj Boyd... Kelly. Bryant.

Cam would light that unit up without a problem.
