2017 team vs. 2024 team

FSU was not a lackluster performance at all. We led comfortably the ENTIRE game. The game was actually worse than the score because of the TD we gave up in garbage time.

All the Grassy OGs....

Was it like this all the time from 2000-2002 on those ol internet boards?
Not that I can remember. Stupid posts like this wouldn’t really even get acknowledged back in the day.

A post like this would get buried almost immediately and would end up on the 2nd page in no time.

The amount of quality of posters back then were night and day compared to what we see here on CIS these days.

There was definitely a "Fire Coker - Dorsey Sucks" contingent after that 2000 UW loss.

All of our games from 2017 weren't nail-biters either, but a lot were, and yes we beat fsu by 22 points but they are 1-7 this year. To plead my case I'd like to ask all of you what your predictions were before the game? Did the team play like you thought they would or did they have a more lackluster performance comparatively speaking? Your predictions are probably on the board so just keeping 💯.
The team played the way they had to play to win the game by 22 **** points. FSU was SOLEY focused on stopping the pass game. So, we run the ball on them all night long. That lead to time consuming drives that ate the clock. I promise you, if we had 12 possessions, and scored on 11 of 12, the score would have been far worse. That simply couldn't happen with long, sustained drives like we used.

It was a very well coached game, and I am proud of our team for executing as well as they did.

I will say this about the 1-7 FSU team. It's not like they are getting blown out by 50 every game. They are not THAT bad. Like others have said, we beat them worse than Clemson. They are bad, but they have stayed in most of their games. We walked away from them.

I love revisionist history & recency bias. Thank God I don’t live in either realm.

Both the 2017 & 2024 teams r super flawed, it’s just that the 2024 team is much more exciting on O w/ a competent QB.

In 2017, that Toledo team we struggled against went 11-3 on the season. In fact, & it’s not up for debate, the 2017 schedule was much more daunting than the 2024 schedule. Our 1st 8 opponents went a combined 54-44 on the season, & by game 8, their combined record was +4 games over .500 in 2017. Our opponents combined record is TBD for 2024, but as of game 8 is a combined sub .500.

The biggest difference is the Offense in 2017 was decent, ranking 25th after game 8, while in 2024 it’s ‘don’t leave ur seat’ exciting. The defenses, on the other hand, r different. The 2017 defense was very disruptive, creating a lot of havoc plays, top 5 in sacks & TFLs; in fact, it was more exciting to watch the defense than offense in 2017, especially w/ the advent of the T.O chain.

So all in all, if we falter in 2024 it will be due to our defense, where in 2017 it was due to the glass slipper eventually coming off the offense. Imho, the 2024 team is an upgraded version of 2017, but just like in 2017, I’ve had to hold my breath for several games, looking for an oxygen mask.

17 team had MCDonaldson starting as a true freshman, all you needed to know about their prospects against real defenses.

I predicted either a 28-27 let-down squeaker or a blowout victory. For context, I predicted a 10-2 season in August if Cam stayed healthy and was as advertised.
I predicted 10-2 or 11-1 if things fell our way. As for the game I think I predicted 62-19. I was way off on the game prediction, but I THINK we should go 10-2 easy but I'm hoping for 11-1 maybe even 12-0. The way the defense has been playing has shaken my confidence. 5 weeks ago I can't lie I was thinking we would whoop Bama or Georgia's ****, but the defense has made me temper my expectations. I also remembered thinking we could compete with Bama and Clemson back in 2017.

Revisionist history when it comes to a very average 2017 defense. The secondary was much better than this year and they forced a ton of turnovers but they actually gave up more yards passing and the rush defense was much worse. I’d probably give them the edge over this year’s defense because they forced so many turnovers but it no way makes up for the Grand Canyon sized gap between the two offenses. This year’s offense is better at every position. Some by wide margins.

I'm glad someone brought this up. a better comparison is 2020 however this team is neither. unlike those past teams, this one is actually built to last. It has power and speed plus depth. It can both pass and run at will when it needs to. the main weak point is secondary but no team is perfect.

They couldn't pass at will on Saturday though, right. Just keeping it 💯. I have the ability to see things objectively which can be deemed a sin on this board apparently.

After 3 lackluster performances this team is starting to remind me of the 2017 team where just about every game was closer than it should have been and most were nail-biters. At least we're still winning, but **** even the 2017 team started 10-0.
Completely different makeup. That was a defensive oriented team that occasionally got some offensive splashes. Obviously that's not what we're looking at this year.

It’s like folks are waiting to say I told you so
Oh they are and I don't see the point. Yea this team may very well lose a couple games yet. And? Are you happy enjoying the previous wins less then?

The game played out pretty much as I predicted. I thought the score would be a bit higher for us (my prediction was 42-13), but thought there would be a defensive score or a very short field after a turnover, and that didn't happen. I said FSU would focus on stopping the pass, which is exactly what they did, though I did think Cam would still hit 300 yds passing and some TDs anyway. But we excelled in the running game since FSU was all out to stop the pass. Not every team has the ability to do that. Our offense can win any way ..pass heavy, run heavy, or balanced depending on how the defense tries to stop us.
