2017 Canes commits/targets in action: JR highlights, camps

This should be another recruiting cycle in which we won't have to leave the state to address LB. Exceptions can always be made if truly elite out-of-state targets want to join the class and not play games, but there's plenty of top-end talent at the position once again locally.

Current commits
Dunning
Steed
Kearney

Possible targets
Dylan Moses (IMG Academy, No. 1-ranked recruit in the 2017 class)
De'Andre Wilder (Carol City)
VanDarius Cowan (Palm Beach Gardens)
Nadarius F agan (Southridge)

IIRC, the fathers of both Steed and Wilder post on this board. Steed missed all of last season with a knee injury, so hopefully his recovery is going well. Wilder is an animal coming off a 14-sack season who already has offers from Miami, Alabama, Notre Dame, Michigan State, and Florida. Cowan decommitted from Florida State in October, but recommitted to FSU two months later. F agan, who has offers from Alabama and LSU, is one of many top talents coming out of Southridge this season. He doesn't have a Miami offer yet.

Steed missed 2015 to have shoulder surgery not knee surgery. He is 100% now and measured up at 6'1" and 225 lbs at the Army Combine.

That is great to hear he is 100% and getting bigger and stronger! I noticed 247 updated his height and weight to 6'1" 218. They also list his 40 at 4.6... is this legit?

Geo I like Steed's commitment and this is not a knock on his talent, but would you say that Wilder and N. F'agan are better "or" more highly regarded backers?

I know this is only your opinion but what basis are you making this assumption? Steed ran a 4.73 laser last year at the Nike combine, he also ran a 4.53 and 4.54 hand time at Texas A&M and UTSA camps as a freshman. Steed weighs 225 lbs legit. He did miss the whole season last fall but believe me the instincts and quickness are still there. His shuttle times are always top of the charts when ranked against other backers in his class. I did see more aggressiveness in Wilder's tape but I saw more all around plays being made in Steed's film. Then again he is my son but I tend to believe that I call it how I see it just with a biased eye I guess lol!!!

Wow if he runs a 4.6 at 225 he will be faster than most our returning secondary... it's kind of sad that our secondary is so slow but we will have some big LBs that can run.

4.52 (4.37): 29 Corn Elder DB 5-10 183 Jr.
4.57 Henley 170 lbs
4.58 (4.61): 27 Ryan Mayes DB 6-1 203 RFr.
4.60 J. Johnson 190 pounds
4.62 6 Jamal Carter DB 6-1 209 Jr.
4.64 M. Jackson 195lbs
4.64 Redwine 196 lbs
4.87 Knowles 185 pounds

We lost 3 of our fastest DBs...
4.39 (4.47): 1 Artie Burns DB 6-0 193 Jr.
4.45 (DNR): 2 Deon Bush DB 6-1 205 (198) Sr.
4.52 Tracy Howard DB 5-11 191 Sr.

I do think our young DBs will improved on their 40 times this year though.... they all do.

You haven't heard? The guys that are not committed or not coming are always better than the ones we get... for a while I thought Latrell Williams was better than Dionte Mullins based on the sentiments here...

As long as he is healthy, your son will be the most physically ready to play right away when he gets here.

Justin Broiles (6'0", 175 pounds) is a DB from Oklahoma whose recruitment is really starting to pick up. Banda and Baez follow him on Twitter, but he hasn't been offered by Miami yet. Picked up offers from Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Houston over the last few days, though, and looks like a really impressive player.

Juwan Burgess (6'0", 175 pounds), a four-star S/ATH from Tampa, says he's been re-offered by Miami's new staff. Very talented player with offers from Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Florida State, Auburn, Georgia, UCLA, and Michigan.

This is a player who doesn't have an offer from Miami, and I obviously have no idea if he'll be drawing any interest from us. But Denzel Houston (6'0", 180 pounds) is a dual-threat QB from Daytona Beach, FL with outstanding highlights who could draw interest from programs around the country as an ATH.

Houston accounted for 43 touchdowns last season (34 passing, 9 rushing). Since he may not be a fit at QB for a staff that prefers pro-style passers, he could be a really interesting prospect for us if he's open to switching positions in college.

Remembered hearing about him on these boards a long time ago. Created a separate thread for him since he's not currently considered a Miami target.

247 Sports is reporting that Shawn Smith, a four-star WR/ATH from Georgia, has named Miami as his current leader. They also said last week that he plans to attend Junior Day this weekend.
