2014 Defensive Depth Chart (4-3)

Just get him on the field. I'm already operating under the notion that Golden and Dorito could **** up a cup of coffee. If they can't figure out a way to make all these pieces fit over the next two years then they aren't worth a ****.

I just don't see a linebacker when I look at Thomas. He's a big dude.

Rok...he's like 240, which is around the weight of our 3-4 OLBs. He may grow into a 3-4 DE though, but right now the size weight combo would put him squarely at 3-4 OLB....and Golden wants those guys at 252 anyway, that was what he said AQM should be at be at next year. Not sure Thomas can cover the flat, but he'd be a good rush backer for a year till he fills out more.

Thing is that he's 240 (say, 230) in November of his HS senior year. He's like 6' 5+ with weirdly long arms. He claims he was going to really step it up working out by "doing a lot of pushups and stuff." I'm sure they have some weight program at BTW, but he looks like he hasn't peaked. The guy could probably not try to gain much weight and naturally be 250+ by the time he steps foot on campus. As a Soph, it wouldn't surprise me if he's 265-270. Sure, there are edge 3-4 guys who are in that range, but they're mostly all in their late 20s in the NFL.

There's no reason to use someone like Thomas in one spot anyway.

DE Chick Moten Kamalu
NT Wyche Jenkins
DE Pierre Hamilton
WOLB Muhammad Harris
WILB Kirby Grace
SILB Figueroa Blue
SOLB McCord Thomas
CB Burns Crawford
CB Howard Gunter Elder
FS Bush Lockley or JUCO
SS Carter Jenkins

Missing Valetine at NT. I'd have CT99 at DE behind(**** maybe in front of) Pierre. Mike Smith at OLB behind McCord where you had CT99. Also I really don't see AQM at OLB either. Think he is in the rotation at DE.

The lack of a dominant NT or a dominant DL period is why I'm thinking 4-3.

Thomas, Moten, Valentine, Wyche, Harris could all be ready to play immediately from a physical standpoint.

I'd have to ask why they continued the transition to this version if they weren't going to move forward with it. It's not like Curtis Porter was the prototype, large-bodied NT and we decided to play to his strengths. He was asked to gain 20 pounds.
It seems like he gained 20 lbs at the detriment of his skills along with others in our front 7. Our front 7 is slowww. We're not explosive and I don't like it.

Hopefully Thomas isn't asked to balloon like Chick. **** shame what they did to that boy.

Also, going forward I'm interested to see how the staff uses a guy like Grace. Obviously he isn't Golden's prototypical LB body-type. He's definitely a Will in a 4-3 as opposed to really anything in a 3-4. I'm sure he'll start out in the Cornelius role--nickel LB skilled in pass coverage. But going forward, what's our plan for him?

SDE- chick kamalu moten
NT- wyche valentine Jenkins
WDE- pierre hamilton/Thomas/aqm
SOLB- mccord armbrister smith/McCray
LB- (perryman) figs owens
LB- kirby grace
CB- howard elder
CB-gunter crawford
SS-bush carter
BANDIT-burns dortch
FS-jenkins hope

Aligned basically like a 4-2-5

SOLB- is basically the stand up rush end green is playing this yr but also actually has ability to drop back in coverage

Not sure who I'm more comfortable with playing centerfield between Jenkins and bush.

Chad Thomas is a future 1st round draft pick at 4-3 DE or 3-4 OLB.

He's the prototype.

If we ask him to gain a ton of weight and 2-gap on the inside I'll lose my ****.

We've got the personnel to run a 4-3

DE McCord - Muhammad - Hoilett - Jackson
DT Pierre - Hamilton - Valentine - King
DT Wyche - Moore - Moten - Jenkins
DE Chickillo - Kamalu - Thomas - Harris

SLB Figueroa - Armbrister - Owens
MLB Kirby - Blue - Young
WLB Perryman - Grace - Smith - McCray

CB Gunter - Burns - Dortch - Mayes - Turner
SS Bush - Fentress - Lewis
FS Jenkins - Carter - Hope - Gray
CB Howard - Crawford - Elder - Bethel

I see improvement.

110th ranked defense for 2014? Hope so.

Dump the pu$$y scheme and we can move forward

Here's a different take. Our current depth chart reads like a 4-3 with Shayon/Gilbert/AQM listed as a DE but lining up as an OLB.

DE Chick - Kamalu - Thomas - Perry

SLB Figueroa - McCord - Smith
MLB Kirby - Blue - Young
WLB Armbrister - Grace - Owens - McCray

CB Gunter - Burns - Dortch - Bethel - Lewis
SS Bush - Fentress
FS Jenkins - Carter - Gray
CB Howard - Crawford - Elder - Hope - Mays - Turner

Totally agree.

He's already said coaches want him playing the OLB role, so that's a relief.

Why does everyone drop Gray in at safety. Kid has never played defense and doesn't want to. If he gets in it will be WR, maybe RB, but he wants to be a QB. Sure his size and speed makes us want him there but it is not going to happen.
