I don't know if anybody caught this but during the NFL pregame show on fox. Howie Long said that players don't like the 2 gap system because it doesn't work.

In my day, 2 gap was something ya did with a lady during a drive-in movie.

We really run a 2 gap?

Just looking at the roster we dont have any of the essential personnel to run a 2 gap. No mammoth NT, No Big inside backers to take on and shed blocks, no 280-300 pound ends...

No wonder we rank last, yikes

mind boggling that we are sticking to it. not to mention that our recruiting grounds are littered with speed DL and LBs. smfh

It clearly works, we've seen it work..... he said no one wants to play in a two gap, but the implication was that it's not fun to play in.

It isn't for most d-lineman and they'd tell you that. They take on constant double teams and really don't get to put up any individual numbers. In that type of scheme the linebackers put up all the numbers.

I saw a lot of one gap technique when i rewatched the NC game. Guys firing right off into a gap, slanting to one side or the other. Most of the time these guys took themselves right out of the play by arbitrarily picking a gap and firing into it with no regard for the where the play was actually going. They end up on the ground and useless most of the time. I have seen Chick fire into the inside gap and lose contain on way too many plays.

That Bama defenders look miserable out there running this scheme.

Bicho is here!!!

This is so true! The Bernard TD run at the 3:03 mark in the 2nd qtr is a perfect illustration of this. Chickillo slants inside there's no backside contain. Frustrating to say the least!

The only difference is your main pass rusher is a 4-3 end playing rush linebacker in a 2 gap scheme. Think Cam Wake on the dolphins who went from 3-4 linebacker to 4-3 end this year. His role is basically the same.

Our pass rush is going to be developed through guys like McCord and Terry once they develop their bodies and skills more.

Bicho has spoken.

Bama runs a two gap system, but their system is very very aggressive. They blitz a lot, and play a ton of man. Saban has been quoted as saying he has no interest in corners that cant play bump and run.

May as well stick with it so it's not foreign to the guys when we DO have the personnel to run it. Clearly it's not going to change and Golden likes to recruit 240lb LBers and big ends. They just haven't quite developed yet.

Soon....soon my good man.

There were a lot more examples of this against UNC. I laugh when these arm chair d coordinators get on here and start talking about Gap Schemes. The biggest problem is the players on the D Line not the scheme. I wish the D Line would just fire off at the knees of these guys and great a big traffic jam. At least they wouldn't be blown back into our LBs creating a mess they can't get around.

Have you guys ever seen the movie all the right moves. The coach tells his lineman just to fire off the ball and take the legs out of the other teams lineman.

I think someone said it earlier you gotta be smart to play the gap which is why a lot of players don't like it
