Spring football is in swing and the board keeps expanding. Here is the latest on recruiting:
- Miami is hosting several big unofficial visitors tomorrow, including QB Dereon Coleman (Orlando), RB Derrek Cooper (Chaminade), WR Jasen Lopez (Chaminade), OL Joel Ervin (Fort Myers), LB Jordan Campbell (Carol City), DB Jaelan Waters (Armwood), DB Andre Clarke (Richmond, VA) and DB Justice Fitzpatrick (STA).
The Canes continue to trend heavily for Waters and, while not as far along, I am optimistic on Lopez. He is a high-priority target.
- Some names to add to the board: RB Henry Ohlinger (Columbus, OH), LB Jacob Eberhart (St. Louis, MO) DE Luke Wafle (Princeton, NJ), DL Corey Wells (Hattiesburg, MS), Nolan Wilson (Pearl River, MS) and DL Keshawn Stancil (Raleigh, NC).
- The athleticism of the roster has impressed some of our new defensive staffers. It's early, but some names standing out are CB Xavier Lucas (great INT in man coverage on Wednesday), S Zechariah Poyser (aware, twitchy) and S Dylan Day (multiple picks/PBUs so far). All three freshman WRs (Malachi Toney, Daylyn Upshaw and Josh Moore) are making plays, with Toney in particular looking like he can contribute early.
- WR JoJo Trader is also moving with more confidence after his bowl performance and weight gain. He looks like the top guy. TE Elija Lofton might be, along with OT Francis Mauigoa, the best player on the team. He's been living in the weight room and is a threat all over the formation.
