But why isn’t Rooster making those explosive runs? That’s supposed to be his game.
I would say two reasons:

1) he has a light lower half which allows him to get tripped up easily, which happened a lot this year right before he was about to break one (can be seen in his highlights thread)

and 2) he was a 185 lb change of pace back getting Derrick Henry touches due to injuries. He was gassed and beat up

I agree with all that. But this is all the more reason to add more capable runners to the room, if possible.

In a perfect world, Thad Franklin has a great offseason and comes into camp ready to play. He is the perfect complement to the other two.

I have no dog in this fight as far as adding to the RB room - the more the merrier as long as new guys aren’t promised anything.

Simply wanted to comment on the Cam and Rooster debate because imo, Rooster was better for our offense because he kept us ahead of the chains on the ground more than Cam (more “successful plays”) while still adding the game-breaking plays through the passing game.

Again Cam was solid, and he seems like someone who will look better in the league than in college (e.g. Gus Edwards).

Cam is the king at getting absolutely nothing all game then busting one 60 yard run every once in a blue moon. That’s very below average regardless what his ypc says. Again stats aren’t everything. You need to know the context.

If you remove the Central Connecticut State game from Cam Harris’s stats (Rooster only played against P5 Schools) Cam Harris had like 4.3ypc and 4.85 yards per touch. Rooster averaged 5.1 yards/touch. Knighton has more talent as well.

Cam is also the king of having to constantly dodge multiple defenders in the backfield. The blocking he got this year is the worst I have ever seen at this school. Lineman being completely rag dolled into his lap three and four yards deep in the backfield.

Rewatch the games. The blocking is shockingly bad.

without reading the entire thread, is he in the portal? and for anyone L'ingOL @ this dude being better than brown and franklin, open your eyes. Parrish is a ****** stud and would instantly be the #2 or 3 bare minimum back here. Cody brown isn't very good at all, and franklin is a terrific big back to wear down a defense, but not very dynamic.

Come on Dmoney..if Cam ran for 5.8 ypc nobody knows that but him and you. Cam left alot to be desired in his career here. Just never felt like he got any closure and never felt like he had that signature game that we wont forget. That said, I wouldnt be surprised if he popped up on a 53 man squad at some point either.
I knew that..cam was the victim of a poor run blocking oline..and fans who love the new shines toys in recruiting. Cam was the best back in 2020 but fans didn’t want to admit that because they thought Don should’ve been starting and rooster should get more carries. All 3 ran behind the same oline with same stale running plays ( let CIS tell it) but performed the best out of that room..maybe it was his short arms idk..but fans had some weird expectations for cam

Cam Harris ran for 5.8 yards per carry with the same playcalls and same OL.

We need more from Chaney and Knighton before we say the position is locked down.
But as somebody said earlier, minimum gain, minimum gain, 60 yard td burst. The play calls and OL have to get better for all our backs. What back have we had in the last 15+ years that has been able to maximize their potential here? Not even Duke or Lamar were able to consistently pick up chunk yardage because of questionable run game play calling and blocking scheme. It’s been weird and frustrating.

People always undervalue this sort of RB because of the measurables. Doesn't have good size, and has good but not elite speed... so he must not be a good RB. But, he's got great hands, great vision in the backfield, and elite balance through contact (which allows him to play above his size). That's more than enough to allow him to be productive and efficient with his touches (which he clearly has been his HS and college career).

Whether he's better than Chaney, Knighton, and Thad is a fair question. Chaney has the tools to be elite if he can stay healthy and put it all together. Knighton is a little more physically limited (than Chaney, not Parrish) but dangerous with the ball and as a WR out of the backfield. And if Thad keeps the momentum he started building near the end of the year he will be a major problem for defenses (especially late in games... he's just a big, strong natural RB who plays with great pad level and had excellent 10-yard acceleration despite only average top end speed). Personally, I don't think there should be much question that he's better than Brown (I like Brown but I wish he had Parrish's lateral agility, acceleration, and vision... if he did he'd be Thad Franklin w/ a better work attitude).

IMO, @Hoyacane1620 summed this situation up perfectly on page 2. You just can't keep all of these S.Fla kids home, and at best Parrish would still be in a time-share situation down here that wouldn't make him any happier.

I know Chaney is super talented BUT injuries scares me in his longevity.
Some how Chaney must break loose in his hype and let it explode this year .

Being in the chase we cannot put everything on him being fully recovered so getting Parrish will surly help if he isn’t.

Thad is going to make you guys believers this year. He will be the most consistent back we have this year. Which is what our running game lacked.

Its all fine and dandy to get me long runs here and there, but thats not what its designed to do.

To break it down into obvious and simplistic terms you would rather have a back that gets you 4 yards every single time he touches the ball than anything else in football. Whereas a back that avgs over 5 yards per carry but most of his a carries are under 3 yards is a drive killer. The 4 yarder means you can send TVD and Hedley home for the games, because you would never punt, and you would never lose. The 5 yarder could mean your running game sucks. The back that fits any offense the best is the one who is the most consistent and avgs over 4 yards per carry.

Cam was actually more consistent than Rooster. If you take way their longest run in a game and then avg their ypg Cam's ypg was 3.6 and Roosters was 2.8 and Thads was 6. Cam would have avg under 4 yards 50% of the games he played in. Rooster would have avg under 4 yards 80% of the games he played in and Thad only 33% of the time.

Is Parrish in the portal?

To bring Parrish on is basically admitting we screwed up an eval in the room. So which one was it? Definitely isnt Don or Knighton.

Anyone who gives up on Brown or Thad is crazy. Everyone isnt Adrian Peterson where they go ape$hit their true freshman season. Most of yall would have said Willis McGahee was a bust since he didnt flash until his 3rd year here. Give the kids a chance before saying they are not good enough.

I love Chaney and Rooster, but I want to see them average 5 yards per carry before we declare the RB room stacked.

Parrish was 5.3 last year on decent volume. Chaney is a career 4.6. Knighton was 3.9 last year. Too low for backs with their explosiveness.
blame Lashlee for some of Knighton's low average. repeatedly running that type of running back into the backs of the OL won't result in many yards.

Not really. We only have 4 RBs on scholarship. We could actually use 2 more

But why didn't Cam have a low average?

All three backs are more home run players than 4-6 yard grinders. But only one of them has consistently made explosive runs, and he's gone. We need improvement there, internally or through competition.

Just FYI, how many years of eligibility does Parrish have remaining.

Because I could see a situation where we top out at 15-20 HS kids who sign, but if we lose enough of our current roster to the Portal, we'd have plenty of replacement ICs.

i dont have all of Cam's runs, but if you remove the top 5 percent and bottom 5 percent you might have your answer.

Why wasn't Knighton making those big runs? Those count, too.

I'd get the argument if Knighton and Chaney were getting us 4-6 consistently. But they are home-run hitters, too. They've just been less successful in hitting them as runners.
