Observations from Spring Practice #4

Miami football was back in action today after a week off with spring break, and picked up right where they left off last week with a mix of individual drills and one-on-one routes as practice game to a close. While there hasn’t been full contact for the most part, we could see full pads as early as this Saturday.

My observations from Spring Practice #4:

OFFENSE:

WR Josiah Trader (0) was electric, in both routes I saw he was extremely shifty and even beat CB Charles Brantley (19) on a stop and go route for a TD. I expect a big year for him.
OL Francis Mauigoa (61) continues to be a star, consistently winning reps during one on one drills. He will be the focal point of the O-Line and boost his draft stock even higher this year.
WR Daylyn Upshaw (13) continues to slowly build under-the-radar. While Toney (12) and Moore (3) are gathering lots of buzz (deservedly so), Upshaw continues to demonstrate his ability to get separation with short passes.
Didn’t see much from the running backs today, were mostly in the corner doing individuals.
TE/FB Elija Lofton (9) worked with the wide receivers early with screen routes. I could see him being used in a similar manner as former TE David Njoku, with his ability after the catch on bubble screens and flat routes being utilized.
QB Carson Beck (11) began some individual throwing drills today, and I will leave it at that.

DEFENSE:

We got our first look at CB Damari Brown (2) today, he moved well and appeared to put on some size from last season.
Once again S Zechariah Poyser (7) impressed me with his intensity during the drills. Poyser is always at a 100 percent, even trying to force fumbles during drills.
DB Dylan Day (23) looks ready to take on a larger role this year, had a nice tip drill interception during one-on-ones.
Again DB Xavier Lucas (6) looked really fluid during his drills, moves freely and looks comfortable in coverage.
Both DL Justin Scott and Armondo Blount looked explosive on the line, the buzz that is growing around the pair is well deserved.

Don't worry our new kicker tagged tony bugeja as one of his coaches for kicking. Coach Tony trained Pat O'Donnell.

Only Question I have On Elijah Lofton is How Many Snaps will he Have in the Backfield with Go Routes & How Many Carries. Hopped They Don’t Pigeon hole him at Tight End. Used him like a Brock Bowers +Carries. I am Sure Beck knows what that looks like.
