Been confused as to why y'all call it "states" down here as long as I've followed Miami football lol. That's definitely a Florida thing.

In that context you’re correct. But in Fleming’s context state’s is indicative of multiple games to win the title, not multiple states. State’s not being a singular event. It’s all about context. Writer could’ve helped out by using State’s in stead of states. But it’s trivial to say the least.
Also here’s an example of similar terminology. An athlete stating they’re aiming for World’s in their bid for the World championship. There’s only one world to which we compete.
