You really think if D asked about Fletcher, Merritt would say anything substantial? Lol you people are nuts man. Truly.

Seems very surprising (concerning?) that the incumbent starting RB is not even mentioned in the interview. Understand he’s been hurt but to not even mention is strange.

Mario has embargoed any comment about injuries. Of course, he himself broke that a few weeks ago saying Fletcher would be good for Fall practice. But he's the HC so it's his call when and what to say. ... Take that how you want. I personally wouldn't expect Fletcher to be back in games any time soon..

"On Ajay Allen: I expect him to be a huge contributor. Last year, he was getting ready to be but got nicked up a little bit. He recovered throughout the spring, and has brought a level of professionalism. He’s a very instinctive player, and has a high football IQ for the running back position. He knows what’s going on and sees the field extremely well. I expect him to have an incredible year for us."

Looks like this is our #2 for the Florida game, and he's going to be an excellent change of pace substituting in for Martinez.

It is alot more ‘substantial’ that the incumbent starting running back is not even mentioned by the rb coach in an interview where he goes down the line on his RB room than if he had said some vanilla comment.

You think its normal to act like Mark Fletcher doesnt exist during an interview covering his position group? If thinking that is notable makes me nuts then call me Lance Leggett. Taste One 🥜 ™️

“Hey coach how about fletcher how’s he looking?”

“Thanks for asking D$. Yeah he’s got two prosthetic knees and one foot got caught in a trash compactor and was never recovered. But he’s good to go”

The purpose of these interviews is not for hard-hitting journalism.

The staff is not ever going to say anything about injuries or anything specific that will give any insight into anything worthwhile in these interviews.

The purpose is for fans to have something to drink lemonade to.

You don't throw a 92mph slider in a charity softball game. And if you do, you're not going to be invited to the next one...

Capiche?

I'm not interested. Our staff shouldn't tell the media jack ****.
Eh, staff doesn't. But media would be nice. UF knows what his injury was and when it happened. They also know who the other guys are. The only limited film is on #24. Not really anything to be lost by giving an update.

I just don't want a Zion situation (this obviously isn't near that) where we had pictures of him with the team as recently as this spring.

Love how much info Merritt was actually willing to provide here. Seems to make it clear Allen & Lyle will earn carries in addition to whenever Fletcher is ready.

It's not just not talking about Fletcher's injury, it's not talking about him at all. I mean, the latter comment is a bit hyperbole but virtually every major podcasts BARELY even mentions Fletcher. It's kind of wild to me. I know it's gamesmanship and all but I don't recall ever seeing anything like it.

So, either Mario is sandbagging it and Fletcher will indeed play on 8/31, or Mario is just like this with injuries in general.

IMO, we won't see Fletcher until game 3-4.

Aside from UF game itself if he can't play I think it's definitely best to hold him out until Va Tech game. The extra 3-4 weeks of time could make a big difference over the course of the entire season. We just gotta ride Martinez heavy (big pause) week 1.

Yea think you just have to read between the lines. Fletcher hasn't gotten hit since like Dec. Until he actually is having contact in practice no point in even asking about him. Mario isn't going to talk about an injury unless he has to.

I don’t even want another back to get a carry against Florida (hyperbole a bit but you get it)

Plenty of weeks down the road to give him whatever rest he needs to bounce back

Read between the lines. Some things are off limits.
