The Miami hurricanes have faced plenty of Man coverage this season as DC's opt to not let Cam Ward sit there and pick apart zone coverages. In these situations the route concepts have been designed for the primary target to get a free release by slowing down the tempo of their route and allowing a teammate to clear the way.
This 2 by 2 set has Restrepo and Brown tight to the nearside. This alignment allows Brown to run a "snag" route (which gets eyes quickly back to the QB to avoid any PI calls)
Restrepo's Hesitation at the snap allows Brown's "route" to clear his path down the sideline for a big gain.
Coach Dawson's go too concept on 3rd and 4th downs are heavily reliant on the timing of his receivers releases. This concept has worked in every game this year starting off with a BANG vs UF.
2 by 2 set with Brown and Restrepo. Brown is running a seem with an inside stem to clear the path for X. This Concept is dependent on the tempo in which X runs this whip route as Brown is creating the space with his Seem.
This creates 5 yards of separation which promotes yards after the catch.
We are running the same concept but begin in a 13 set then Motion X across to confirm the man coverage. This off cushion works in our favor as Brown is about to clear out on another inside stem seem to create space.
This concept has yet to be stopped and we successfully move the chains each time it is dialed. 2 of the most critical 4th Down conversions of the season have come from this concept. Here below is the game saving conversion vs VT.
This 4th down conversion vs Cal was MUST have and Coach Dawson went back to the well.
Coach Dawson continued to victimize Man coverage vs Louisville with a similar concept. This time with TE Elijah Arroyo attacking vertically on a corner route while Sam Brown ran a jerk route over the middle of the field.
Arroyo clears the Safety and widens him outside the hash with a corner route, While X runs does the same which OPENED up the entire middle of the field.
It was Brown's tempo to this route that helped turn it into an Explosive TD by luring the underneath defenders to sleep and allowing his teammates to stretch the defense horizontally.
Defenses can't just key in on the outside WR's setting picks for X as he is used to clear paths for them as well like this slant to Jacolby George.
Coach Dawson this season has used Xavier Restrepo very similar to how he deployed tank dell. If everyone knows who is going to get the football how does he continue to get open? The answer is slowing down the tempo of their routes to let their teammates clear out the traffic.
This is a 4th and 10 situation vs a Zone coverage. It's a 13 set (trips right) X is lined up as the #2 WR. The entire Stadium knows who is getting this football but look how the play is designed to turn a must have conversion into a simple pitch and catch between All Americans.
When the ball is snapped, X delays his release allowing two big targets in Elijah Arroyo and Isaiah Horton to clear out the traffic which opens the back shoulder throw right at the sticks.
Canes fans should continue to look forward to the canes offense lighting up the score boards but these critical conversions and timely play calls are what allows us to stay on the field to put up the points that we do.
