Carol City ATH Trayone Gray (6'2", 200) came into today without a Miami offer, but left the camp as a ‘Canes commit. The versatile athlete is thrilled at the opportunity to be a Hurricane.
“It feels good to be a Miami Hurricane. They’ve always been my dream school and one of my top four schools and after the camp today I spoke to Coach Golden and Coach Coley and they told me how much they liked me as a player. I felt comfortable around them so I decided to commit,” said Gray.
Gray had stated earlier in the week that he wanted to compete at the camp and he came through on his promise.
“I was trying to go there to show them my talents because it was the last camp and I had to get that offer.”
The Carol City product had a simple answer when asked why he committed to Miami.
“It’s close to home and the background of Miami like all the players that went there is great. The system fits me.”
Although Gray plays quarterback for his team, it looks like he will be playing receiver at the next level.
“X-receiver or quarterback, but mainly receiver. They asked me what I wanted to play and I said offense because they were talking about receiver or safety, but I think I’ll play mostly offense.”
If Gray lives up to his comparison, the ‘Canes got a great one.
“A lot of people told me that I play like Anquan Boldin because I’m real physical off the jam and I deliver hits.”
Gray had to explain to his mother that he would be attending the University of Miami.
“I told her, but she’s not really into football so she didn’t know what that meant. I told her I’m going to the U and she was like ‘OK’ so I told her I committed and she was like ‘what is that?’ She just told me to keep praying and god is going to bless you. She was very excited.”
Gray is only the second Carol City Chief to commit to Miami since Kenny Phillips in 2005, with Allen Hurns being the other.
“It’s big for me to put Carol City back on the map. More people can be recruited and seen because there’s a lot of good players. I just think it’s big because I’m trying to put my team on the map as much as I can.”
“I’ll try to talk to some of them and get them to UM with me. I know Dalvin from when we were little and we played optimist together, but since he’s been playing for Central I haven’t really spoken to him like that.”
Those close to Trayone know of him as “Chocolate”. The new Hurricane explained the meaning behind his nickname.
“When I was little, all I wanted was chocolate and football. People think it’s because I’m real dark-skinned, but that’s not true because chocolate is kind of light brown.”
