I’ve been meaning to post this since Saturday. My seats are field level couple rows back behind the defensive area. During the game a very excited 16 year old boy was there with his mother and was holding up a giant sign that said:

First hurricanes game - check
16th birthday - check
Getting a pair of Xavier Restrepo‘s game worn gloves - and of course no check.

He held that sign up all game and to be honest, it was getting annoying because he was blocking our view in the middle of plays. I don’t think he realized that - but at some point a few folks were kind of signaling irritation, and the mother guided him to not hold up the sign in the middle of plays and block others view.

After that things calmed down and he usually stopped holding it up when plays happened.

It was getting late in the the game and Restrepo was standing pretty close to our section waiting to return a punt. A few folks in our section (and the 16 year old) kept calling his name and finally he turned around, and this kid held up his sign, looking for his dream of getting game gloves from Restrepo.

Xavier kind of nodded and went about his business. After he fair caught the punt, a few minutes later a staffer came walking over to the kid while Restrepo pointed him out, and the staffer handed him Xavier Restrepo‘s game gloves.

I don’t think I’ve seen a kid look happier - he was ecstatic. We were all happy for him. He grabbed a marker, checked off his third box on his sign and kept holding it up the rest of the game.

I turned to my wife and I said you see this is why I like that guy - and this is why I love college football.

Go Canes.

And that's how you build more fans and get people to games. That kid will remember that his whole life.

Cool story man, happy for that kid I tell ya. It's the little things in life that make the difference. Not only was that great for the kid, it obviously affected everyone else around. Not surprised in the least tho, that boy X a real one. And he a dawg.
Yeah man I won’t forget it. I should add that the kid put the gloves on right away and wore them while smiling nonstop.

When he absolutely tears fsu a new ******* a la Braxton Berrios in 2017, he is going to vault significantly in my favorite canes ever ranking.

He’s already really high as it is. I just love everything about this kid. Not the most talented player or receiver we’ve ever had, but he epitomizes what it is to be a Hurricane. Hard work, passion, loyalty, dependability, and a burning desire to bury your *** in the ground. Good for X, I’m glad the kid got the gloves. He’ll remember that for a long time.

Thanks for sharing this story OP. Not like I needed one more reason to love X, just that the world is so F’ed up right now that seeing/hearing these stories is a refreshing reminder that not everyone is an azzwhole.
Yeah man you’re welcome. I could also add that the boys mom was choked up and kind of crying at the end and everyone around her was hugging her. But you could probably guess that. It was a nice moment and I agree with you that taking time out to share nice moments is a good thing in a world that sometimes seems full of vitriol,

Think the insidetheu asked him about it also..

Wow man yes! You’re right. Its at roughly the 8 min mark.

I didn’t notice when exactly he took them off, but for sure that’s what he did with them and why he didn’t have them. And I love how humble he was about it - unless it’s something he could get in trouble for in which case I didn’t mean to dry snitch. What he did with those gloves is make some kid light the **** up and have the time of his life, and our little section loved it.
