Why would they drop bags to a recruit that isn't even elite? I could understand if it was ty Campbell or surtain etc.
Beacuase, if you believe multiple posters, every school buys (bags!) every recruit. You know, every school but us. Pretty amazing our team even exists, if you buy that constant whining.
Friend of mine who was pretty plugged in told me in the '80's that we only paid Dade kids. I was never able to verify that. I did hear, long before it came out in the NCAA mess (the one surrounding the Pell grants) that our Golden Canes (or somebody else) were paying bounties. Back in about '89, I met a recent graduate who had been involved in a lot of stuff on campus, student govt. and so forth, told me that those guys in the "green sports jackets" (I think it was green) were paying players for big hits. I used to be active in the Hurricane Club, not a big contributor but used to organize events in the D.C. area, and I think the Golden Canes were the guys who were given the green sports jackets. The Golden Canes gave minimum $ 10K per year to the school (not to the players). That was a lot of money for late '80's. Almost thirty years ago. If they were paying bounties--and the NCAA investigation years later found that to be the case--they were much much smaller (not in the thousands per hit).
Other friends of mine who were active in recruiting in the early '80's--and back then boosters got involved in recruiting--they used to call and write kids, etc. told me they were never asked to provide money for recruits. The most I ever hear was that boosters were asked for help in finding summer jobs for kids. I think that has always been legal. I know of one good player from the 1990's who was fired from a job at a booster's company because he was not a reliable worker. I guess he thought he didn't really have to work, just get paid.
So, overall, I think we've been pretty honest, probably better than most.
To fast forward, i suspect we are one of the cleaner programs, if not among the very cleanest. We've been too scrutinized, too many hate us (we're like Trump is to the mainstream liberal media), and the predatory press will be all over us.
We just can't compete with the rot that is the SEC and similar schools, perhaps FSU and Clemson in the ACC. We also can't compete with the lower academic standards at some of the schools which can take non-qualifiers and have them turn out to be instant freshman starters and contributors.
Based on what I have heard from reliable sources, FSU might have been changing transcripts on some top recruits from the late '80's. I heard from another source that one of their premier DLs some years ago was advanced money by an agent before the FSU bowl game--a game that should have been forfeited. I remember the name of the player but I'd have to look up the year. My source was an accountant who had some knowledge of the loan, which was probably defaulted by the player.
Keep in mind, I don't know what goes on now. I rarely talk anymore to people who could give me such information. They were really plugged in, though, and there were some talkative guys on the coaching staff. Some of my friends, sadly, are gone.
Whether we pay now, I don't know. I doubt it. I always felt our compensation program paled in comparison to those with whom we competed--like the Bamas of the world.
Even Shapiro said he could not compete with the big money guys at the SEC schools. Nevin's operation was small potatoes and was easily exposed.
So, I'm not sure we're dropping bags around or, if we are, it's probably nothing like the SEC schools. Keep in mind that the Baga's of the world probably do so for kids around the country since they cannot recruit as many topflight recruits right around their home base.
