does he not have it in him to boot it deeper than the 10/15 yard line?

i'm rewatching the game and it seems like most kickoffs were being fielded at the 15/20.

I think it's more strategy than lack of a strong leg. Ball goes a lot higher and has more hang time to allow our guys to get down field. Also allows the returner less of a running start before hitting the wall.

makes sense, but we weren't exactly tagging them right when fielding the kick.

i think we could have gotten better defensive field position for most of those kickoffs if he had just launched them into the endzone.

May have something to do with the new touchback rule. If you've got confidence in your special teams, you'd rather have the guy run the ball out, vs. hitting it deep in the endzone and putting the ball on the 25 (vs. 20 last year).

My money says the OP wasn't aware of the new touchback rule

i am.

if i remember correctly, they were starting offensive drives around the 25/30 most the game. really not gaining much from putting it in their hands.

Ok you made me do it! lol there starting yardages on kickoffs looked like this
25- touchback
30
22
20
15
28
16
35- pooch to end the game

So I would say the coverage was excellent!

i stand corrected. looks like i wasn't paying enough attention to starting field position on their end.

for some reason i thought they were starting off with better field position than that. thanks.

Special teams looks good as **** this year.

Although it was the only aspect of our game that was truly great last year as well. One of the ways you can tell that Golden just gets it.

In watching the GT/VT game last night, one thing I was absolutely pumped about was that when we play both of those teams, there's next to no way we should lose the field position war. Between Wieclaw/Botts, we should have excellent starting field position in comparison to the opponent. That, and the GT/VT punters were TERRIBLE. They can boom it deep on kickoffs all they want, I'll take the ball at the 25 all day long, especially when we've got what looks to be a decisive advantage on both of those teams in the punting department.

Mark it down now--unless Botts comes up lame with an injury, he should at least be a finalist for the Ray Guy award this season--and if he keeps up performances like the one he had at BC, he might win it.

We did lay a few licks on em on kickoff coverage. One time all the guys got up and went crazy. Fentress even fell over Jenkins body while celebrating - it looked like a circus and I loved it!
