CORAL GABLES – With the season-opener less than five days away, UM coach Al Golden has not released a final depth chart. UM will practice until Saturday, giving players to make last-minute cases for playing time.
Based on what we’ve seen all camp, let’s assess potential starters, in order of “position is almost certainly settled” to “completely up in the air.”
Let’s talk defense, first
Three seniors who have played a lot the last three years – middle linebacker Denzel Perryman, defensive end Anthony Chickillo, defensive tackle Olsen Pierre – are sure to start against Louisville. Write those in pen. Perryman’s backup is sophomore Walter Tucker. Junior Ufomba Kamalu and freshman Chad Thomas play behind Chickillo. Kamalu will also back up Pierre.
The third-down 4-3 front will be Muhammad and McCord at ends, Kamalu and Chickillo at tackles. Thomas might get a chance at either spot in pass-rushing situations.
It appears junior Raphael Kirby has the weak-side linebacker spot locked down, though sophomore Jermaine Grace will see time there, especially on passing downs. Similarly, senior Thurston Armbrister will likely get the first reps at strong-side linebacker, with freshman Darrion Owens in relief. Armbrister can play any of the three linebacker spots.
Junior Calvin Heurtelou is probably the starter at nose tackle, but freshman Courtel Jenkins, junior Earl Moore and, possibly, junior Michael Wyche will play. Wyche could be the starter by season’s end, depending on how much his conditioning improves.
At rush end, Golden said junior Tyriq McCord “had a good day today,” but said sophomore Al-Quadin Muhammad and freshman Trent Harris will see time against Louisville. Freshman Demetrius Jackson, who has been a scout-team player this week, could also be in the mix, Golden said.
Guessing the secondary starters is a fool’s errand. Senior Ladarius Gunter, juniors Tracy Howard and Antonio Crawford and sophomores Artie Burns and Corn Elder will rotate all game. Junior safeties Dallas Crawford and Deon Bush and sophomore Jamal Carter will play a lot. Expect freshman Marques Gayot to play a depth role.
What about the offense?
Starters are known at quarterback (freshman Brad Kaaya), tailback (junior Duke Johnson), tight end (senior Clive Walford), left tackle (junior Ereck Flowers), left guard (redshirt senior Jon Feliciano), center (redshirt senior Shane McDermott) and right guard (redshirt sophomore Danny Isidora).
Golden said “will probably play six or seven” at wide receiver. The top three are sophomore Stacy Coley, senior Phillip Dorsett and junior Herb Waters. Redshirt sophomore Malcolm Lewis will see heavy action. Three others almost certain to play are redshirt sophomore D’Mauri Jones and two freshmen, Braxton Berrios and Tyre Brady. Senior Rashawn Scott was a top-five receiver before suffering a shoulder/collarbone injury in camp that will force him to miss several weeks.
Right tackle is the only open job, with redshirt sophomore Taylor Gadbois the leader in the clubhouse. Freshmen Kc McDermott and Trevor Darling are in line for playing time there or at the other tackle spots. Sophomore Alex Gall should be the first guard off the bench.
Golden said he would look at redshirt sophomore Jake O’Donnell and freshman Chris Herndon as depth at tight end behind backup Stan Dobard, a sophomore. The Canes’ depth at that spot took a hit this week when senior Beau Sandland left the program.
And special teams?
Kinda funny, this: Depending on who wins the coin toss, the first Hurricane to touch the ball Monday night could be a former Gator.
Redshirt sophomore Justin Vogel, a walk-on who spent the last two seasons at Florida, has won the starting job as UM’s punter. He will also handle kickoff duties.
Vogel, who battled with senior walk-on Ricky Carroll in camp, said he is averaging around 43 yards and a 4.3-second hang time on his punts, which is Golden’s standard.
Last year’s punter, Palm Beach Central High product Pat O’Donnell, finished second in the nation in punting average (47.8) and was drafted in the sixth round (191st overall) by the Chicago Bears. He was the only specialist taken.
Other noteworthy special-teams items: Golden said freshman Trayone Gray, who has been a scout team player, will see action Monday night on special teams and provides depth at running back.
Redshirt junior Matt Goudis is the kicker. The ultra-versatile Dallas Crawford will be his holder.
The returners are Coley, Dorsett, Burns, Berrios, Carter and possibly Lewis. Expect Coley (kick) and Dorsett (punt) to see the most action, depending on their receiving workload. Berrios will be an immediate contributor as a punt returner.
