I don't often write these type of post because I don't feel like I am worthy of the Lu, Dan E., or Dmoney status or knowledge. But there is a lot of crazy talk in the air and a lot of jimmies rustled. So I wanted to take a look at where we are and where we are going. The sky is not falling.
Coming into this season everyone agreed. Al Golden had some things to prove but this program was headed in the right direction. A 13-11 record after 2 seasons is not great but there was improvement shown when for the first time since what feels like FDR was president we closed out a season positive with a 3-1 record in November. (plus, we kind of won the coastal even if it was backing in)
Now lets move to this season.
Before the season many of us put our predictions in a thread on this very site.

A lot of good thoughts in there. People using their heads and realizing we are building. This is not a NC team but it is the best team Golden has had and we should expect a big improvement. (My own thought was 10-2 this year and making the ACC title game)
So what have we done this year?
We have won and we kept winning. We have won games we didn't expect to and we have won games with amazing comebacks.

That brings us to today. Almost everyone that used their head before the season knew this was a possible 10 win team with some breaks. We have gotten almost all of those breaks and folks those goals of 10 wins and an ACCCG appearance are real.
Did we lose to FSU? Yes. It exposed problems all of us knew we had going into the game. Those are still problems the coaching staff is trying to fix. While we are on problems lets look at some of those.

*Morris has regressed - This might be on Coley but who knows. What I do know is Coley has coached 2 NFL first round QB's and I will take my chances with him. He needs to groom one of these young guys to be the next great QB. So I am not ready to fire Coley just yet.
*Our D can't stop anyone - this is actual crazy talk. We dont have the best D in the world right now but just imagine if we had last years D. We would be 4-4 at best. This defense has caused a lot of turnovers and won 3 games for us this year. There is improvement here. Enough to stop a really great QB? No. But enough to beat good QB's that have beat us year in and out? Yes. So I am not ready to fire D'nofrio just yet.
Numbers to prove it. We were 112 in defense last year. Almost everyone said any Defense in the top 40 would be a great improvement. We are currently 31 in total D. We have more sacks this year than already the entire last year. Its not perfect but it is much much better. So I am not ready to fire D'nofrio just yet.
The last problem is depth - this is the real issue on this team right now. It takes time to fix the pile of shot Golden was left with. There were some good players here but not many elite players like we want. Golden is building which is obvious by our recruiting rankings of #10, #15, and currently #4. We also only have about 72-75 players on scholarship. We need to be in the 80-85 range to continue to build.
In Summary.
We lost to FSU but our goals are still in front of us. This is not a NC team but with the right breaks this is a ACCCG team and then anything can happen. We are not ready to beat elite teams. But we are getting there. Improvement can be seen across the board. (Not everywhere but most places)
We need 2 more recruiting classes to have this thing back where we as fans want it. But until that time we can win this conference and win the coastal and consider those as the steps in the right direction. A lot of experts always say the visual test is the best way to look at things in football. My eyes tell me we have a better coaching staff and players than we have had in 10 years and things are moving in the right direction.
Now get your asses to the VT game this weekend and watch this team full of fight win the Coastal division.
A reminder of last years fun.
