2013 UVA Preview
QB: With the absence of Phillip Sims the QB competition is a two-way race between sophomore David Watford and redshirt freshman David Lambert. Watford is a dual-threat while David Lambert is a pure pocket passer. I believe David Lambert will start and while they will struggle with him this season. The future of UVA will run through Lambert. Freshman Corwin Cutler and Brendan Marshall arive this fall and could possibly put some heat on Lambert and Watford. Current position grade C-
RB: Leading rusher Kevin Parks returns after going for 734 yard and 5 TD's in 2012. The lost a key backup in Perry Jones but they also have reloaded with 5 star freshman running back Taquan Mizzell. It will be interesting to see if 2013 5 star RB Taquan Mizzell comes in and unseats Parks for the starting RB duties. I doubt he will, but he should come in to spell Parks as the primary backup rb. Overall this position group get's a B-.
WR: This position group is loaded. One of the more talented receiving corps in the ACC. If one of the QB's can put it all together this group will have a very bright future. They have both skill and depth at the position. The Cavaliers return their top 4 WR's from last season in Darius Jennings, Dominique Terrell, Tim Smith, E.J. Scott, as well promising sophomore Canaan Severin. With the depth and talent of the top 5 WR's that may very well ease the transition of breaking in a new QB.
Postion Grade B+ only because the QB situation isn't figured out.
TE: Jake Mcgee returns for his junior season. He is athletic and can catch the ball well. Many Miami fans remember his TD catch from the 2012 season that sunk the hearts of many including myself. I don't know much about the back up TE's at UVA. But Mcgee alone get's a C. They don't use him as much as they should in the passing game. He's a good run blocker.
OL: This is by far the worst position group on the entire team. Outside of Morgan Moses these guys are nothing to fear. Unless the OL improves dramatically. The offense will have similar performances to the 2012 season. They will be very spotty and inconsistent. D-
DL: This group did not place pressure on any QB's. They don't stuff the run to well. Good Olines will have no problem with UVA.
They don't return many players to an already poor DL. They do have the talented Eli Harold and Mike Moore at DE. They were both freshman last year so things could look better for the Cavaliers soon. For now this group gets a solid D+.
LB: Losing the leading tackler stings in the LB corps. They have the highly touted Kwontie Moore coming in to play. This group is missing something and is at best an average group.
Grade: C.
DB: Losing Laroy Reynolds is a blow to UVA. Luckily for them their DB recruiting has been phenomenal the last few seasons and he should be easily replaced. A very underrated group. They have Anthony Harris, Demetrius Nicholson, Brandon Phelps, and highly touted incoming freshman in Kirk Garner and Tim Harris. They even locked up the number 1 safety in 2014 Quin Blanding. They recruit DB's and this group get's a B+.
Overall look for UVA to have a similar performance to 2012 this season. But watch out for them during 2015 season.
