Is Manny planning on running some sort of variation of the 4-2-5 that calls for 3 safties on the field?

Depth

We had Jamal Carter who was terrible in coverage (and is leaving) and Rashawn (also leaving) as our safeties

With Finley, Ced, Edwards, Collier, etc. we'll be 2 deep in a position that needs much improvement

Safety is a premium position in this defense. Both of are starters are top 3 in tackles this year. We need depth and we need play makers. Right now, we have JJ who can probably be a pretty good option and that's the end of the list

Here is our depth right now -

Jaquan Johnson - Solid Player, excited to see him improve next year, but not exactly what this staff looks for in a safety in terms of size/speed and aggresion

Robert Knowles - Special Teams player, unless he makes a big leap next year, he is not a Miami caliber safety

Cedrick Wright - similar to Jaquan in terms of Size/Speed and this staff wants bigger/faster players

Romeo Finley - Prob will move to LB

Jeff James - Project player, TBD if he can play here or not

That's 5 players and 1 with solid playing time and proven quality. The others are all ? marks

Need 2-3 guys who can make an instant impact next year

Also we don't seem to have a true FS in this class Carter is in the box as well as Gibson. We need a true "Romer" manning the middle of the field type with Range..

Further, guys like Edwards and Collier can bounce down to play boundary corner. Gibson or Finley can flex down and function like a linebacker if need be on passing downs. Wright and Johnson can play slot.

Having a bunch of guys like that increases our ability to disguise coverage without subbing against high speed offenses.

Obviously there is always a spot for a guy like Henderson or Josh Jobe that can be a pure shutdown corner, but I personally like having a lot og positional versatility as the game evolves.

I'd like to take a third safety. Need the depth and I like Collier as the third safety, gives us a different type then are other safety commits. Unless like some have said, they are planning to play Edwards at safety(if we get him back).

Yeesh. Now I understand the urgency for JUCO DBs in this cycle.

Guess yall forgetting about Amari Carter... him n Gibson are similar in the box safeties... Collier n Edwards would be more FS/CB...Redwine should move to safety also imo..if we land 3-4 corners

Next Year -

S/Rover - Jaquan Johnson

SS - Amari Carter

FS - ??? (Redwine/James/Edwards/Gibson/Collier) aka totally up for grabs

Correct and physical ones that can run! Get enough quality so some can be RS go into the excellent S&C program.

"Defensive coordinator Manny Diaz's defense has enjoyed a successful season, but he says his unit is still a couple of recruiting classes away from the depth he wants."

"It's probably two (classes away) realistically," Diaz said. "When you're still not able to redshirt and get those guys in your weight room - when you talk about freshmen and sophomores it's not just the experience they lack (but also their strength). ... We have to get a signing class now of guys that are ready to contribute early and then stack the 2018 class on top of that with guys that want to come in here and hit the ground running."
