The staff considers the CB rotation to consist of five guys to man two starting spots and the nickel. Thomas Finnie is one of the five (along with the four mentioned in the OP) and is, at least in part, being groomed for the nickel position. Here is a snippet from the Miami Herald from a couple of weeks ago:

[Coach Paul] Williams said he's trying to develop freshman Vernon Davis and sophomore Thomas Finnie at the nickel spot as well. Williams said safety Kacy Rodgers has also seen some time there.

IMHO, the nickel back position is of critical significance, and does not seem to get mentioned as often as it should.

Thats old nesw arcane...Vernon isnt even on the team anymore......and i never recall 5 corners getting burn in a game unless were playing texas tech

He was never all that good to begin with IMHO. Now I may get bashed for this, but this is another example of our fans rationalizing everything. The kid is fast and he is not afraid to get physical, but I never saw anything special regarding his cover skills. It just happened that our CBs last year were so bad that he was able to make some noise. Now that we have actual good freshmen corners, he has fallen back a bit. I still think the kid is gonna contribute here, but I never expected him to be an outside corner. The idea of a nickel back makes more sense, and I think he can be used in various blitz packages.

give me a CB that's really fast and likes to be physical and usually that guy can turn into a player if he's got a good work ethic. Can't teach speed and hard to make a finesse guy become physical. Plus he's got good enough feet. He just was real raw coming in technique wise. That's what good coaching is for.

I wouldnt go so far as to say he wasnt all that good to begin with, but I do agree in the sense that Howard and Crawford (and probably vernon davis too) are more talented guys and Finnie would not have played as much as he did as a freshman if not for the particularly gruesome corner situation last year.

I think Finnie is going to be a good player here, but the talent has increased around him and his name isn't being mentioned as much. Finnie made a couple of nice tackles last year that popped off the screen to me.

I will take that back, what I was trying to articulate was that he was never as good as some Canes made him out to be last year. Since he was the best we got in 2011, many wanted him to be something he simply was not.

blackvern,
I thought you were requesting information. Maybe I misinterpreted your OP.

Blackvern likes to stir up shi* and he's a Shammin slurper too. Look at all his "dammit mane" and "SMH" posts. lol.

Last depth chart i saw had 5 kids listed at CB, including Finnie.

I just locked in the number 5 from the following paragraph in the Miami Herald's Sports Buzz from yesterday:

### Defense: UM says at least four freshmen defensive backs will play, in addition to sophomore newcomer Ladarius Gunter: Howard (listed as a second-teamer but still competing to start); Bush (battling Kacy Rodgers to start at safety); Rayshawn Jenkins (backing up at safety), and Antonio Crawford (projects to be in the five-man corner rotation).

On a different note, I liked Randy Shannon a lot and was very upset about the way it seemed to me that he was maligned by the fans. I did not think he was a good football coach, but I respected his apparent integrity.

I do not hold any of that against Al Golden, however.

With what we fielded at cb last season Finnie should have come in and been the top corner on the roster at some point last season, makes sense he's fallen behind the new cbs.

Finne is a good CB due to the overall package he brings to the table...

His strength(s) is his ability to be physical with receivers coupled with his tackling ability in run support. IMO, he ranks up there with Duane Starks, as far as a former CB at UM, that actually liked to tackle with some umph!!

Things he has to work on is his footspeed, and acceration out of his breaks.

He doesn't have the natural fluid feet or quick hips to break on the ball with the best of them, but because he has good straightline football speed he sometimes breaks even. On 3rd and 5, he may not be the shut down corner you'd liek to have to defend the pass, but throughout the whole game, he's capable fo wearing a receiver out, due to his style of play. Not to mention thelicks he's going to lay on a WR for catching the ball on him.

If you allow this guy to jam at the line all day, he'll consistiently knock guys off their routes. That's half the battle, as this is the stuff that creates that extra second for the pass-rushers, to allow them to get the Sack.

Note: Even some of the best shut down corners are goign to get some balls caught on them, but they aren't always physical at the line, and aren't going to make a RB & WR pay for having the ball like Finne will.

Finne can provide positive contributions to this defense if you ask me.

According to Golden, Finnie has been emerging at corner the past week.
