OK, another great weekend of college football in the books, Had a great time with Coach JB and Shaun King at the Coach JB Football Lounge and Cigar Bar. Some thoughts on what I saw..
-The rumors of UGA's demise was greatly exaggerated. The Dawgs came out and punched Texas in the mouth and bullied them physically at Darrell K Royal. Jalon Walker and Mykell Williams were dominant, and quite frankly, had Quinn Ewers shook. Kirby Smart lead Georgia to a statement victory on prime time, as they controlled the Longhorns and overcame some shaky officiating (you know which overturned call Im talking about.)
As for Texas, I think they might actually have a QB issue, if not controversy. I get the sense there will be more calls for Arch Manning moving forward
- You often hear that football is a week-to-week, month-to-month sport. Nothing could be more truthful. Just a few weeks ago, Bama beat UGA and everyone was crowning Kalen Deboer and Jalen Milroe, and Georgia was a declining program. Now into late October, none of that is true.
Milroe in recent weeks has struggled once again with intermediate throws -- and yeah, he's not proving his naysayers wrong -- and it seems that style of play leaves him a bit worn out physically in games. As for Deboer, excellent coach, he's not at the stage where a 'For Sale' sign is planted on his front but he's finding out that this job is a different animal.
As for Tennessee, they overcame the play of Nico Joe Milton, and eventually got their offense (Dylan Sampson really is the heart beat of that unit) and came away with big gut check victory at Neyland.
- Is Lincoln Riley now officially on the hot seat? I was with USC fan, Henry Ramirez, and he said at Coach JB's on Saturday night, that he absolutely was. If you read Lendale White's X/Twitter, you know how he feels. It's one thing to lose to the Michigans and Penn State's of the world -- it's totally another thing to lose to Minnesota and Maryland.
- Speaking of which, how are Oklahoma fans feeling about Brett Venables at this moment?
- Right now, my coach of the year is Curt Cignetti. His Hoosiers just blew out a rugged Nebraska team 56-7. All this guy has ever done at every other stop is score a lot and win big. I wonder how long IU can keep this guy. But now they go into the next week or two without Kurtis 'Blow' Rourke who injured his thumb. That's a shame, he was on my Heisman list.
- Utah, really solid program that I have a great deal of respect for. But they need Life Alert because they have fallen and they can't get up
- Best game of the weekend in my view was the Friday night thriller between BYU and Okie State. Coming into the season most thought the Cowboys were Big12 contenders, while Kalani Sitake was on a seat that was getting warmer. Now, BYU is undefeated and OSU is a huge letdown. Jake Retzlaff had some late game magic in Provo
- Going back to Miami, re-watched some of this game. I really think this might be the worst Hurricane secondary Ive ever seen. It's not that they dont have an Ed Reed or Sean Taylor, those caliber of players are rare. But they have too many guys that are almost unplayable (you can figure out which ones, they aren't hard to find) but the reality is with Joe Addae recruiting the past few years, well, you HAVE to play them
I have a belief, if you're not going to be a great or good player, you can't be a bad one. Just be a guy who is solid, reliable and will make the routine play. For years, I've seen guys like Charles Pharms, Hurlie Brown, Kenny Berry, Roland Smith, Terris Harris, Casey Greer, Paul White. Herbert James, James Lewis (one of my personal favorites on that 2001 squad), Bobby Harden, etc, who fit that bill. Most of these guys didn't have NFL careers...
But I know that after each game I came away thinking, "We had good reliable secondary play, no big plays were given up and they were sound on the back end."
This current unit has me thinking, ''I really hope Ruben Bain can come up with a sack."
Miami's defense goes far beyond Lance Guidry in my opinion. This is an issue of Jimmy and Joes, here
