UM football recruit Walter Tucker flashes speed at Great Southwest Classic

Miami Hurricanes football coach Al Golden went into last weekend pondering whether Plantation American Heritage speedster Walter Tucker will make a bigger impact as a linebacker with great lateral movement or a bruising running back with breakaway speed.
Tucker might have swung the pendulum toward toting the football by winning the 110 meters hurdles and leading the Team Florida 400-meter relay team to a nation-leading 40.11 seconds at the Great Southwest Classic in New Mexico on Saturday.

Tucker, who signed with Miami on Monday morning, said getting the green light from Golden to continue his track career at Miami played a big role in picking the Hurricanes over Clemson, Tennessee and Georgia.

“Miami said they would let me play football and run track,’’ Tucuker said. “When coach Golden told me that I had the biggest smile on my face. That is when I knew I could make my decision.”

Tucker clocked 13.95 to beat fellow Florida team member Timothy Holmes for the 110 Hurdles title and then put on a stick exchange clinic with Gibbs’ High School’s Trayvon Bromell, American Heritage teammate Jerimy Strainge and Dr. Phillips’ Reggie Glover to help the Team Florida 4x100 clock 40.11. Tucker said he ran a sizzling 9.20 split on the third leg and Strainge brought Team Florida home on the anchor leg.

“The 40.11 means a lot, ‘’ Tucker said. “Great Southwest is a prestigious track meet. Plus you’re going against 50 other states. We were talking about setting the new top time when we were practicing. We were kind of nervous because we never ran with Reggie and Trayvon. We knew we had the speed but we knew we had to put it all together and run.”

Strainge, provided one of the most inspirational stories of this past track season when he returned from an injury which kept him out for a season and a half to win his second state title in the 200 meters and lead the Patriots 1,600 meter relay team (3:14.00) and 400-meter relay team (40.49) to the then No. 1 times in the nation.

Strainge set the tone for a stellar anchor leg by winning the 200 in personal-best 20.78.

“The Tennessee coaching staff has been overly attentive of Jerimy, even before Jerimy ran a 20.84 at Golden South,’’ said Heritage coach Corey Hicks. “They were even committed to him when he ran 21.15. Jerimy has persevered through adversity. He never wavered with his faith. I don’t think we could have asked for a better way for him to go out.”

Bromell, who is headed to Baylor, created perhaps the biggest buzz of the track season when he ran 9.99 to win the 100 meters and become the first prep sprinter to go below 10 seconds. Bromell ran with a +4.0 tailwind, however, which gives him the top national high school “all conditions” time and leaves Jeff Demps’ 10.01 in 2008 as the top non-wind aided time.

This is why i say redshirt him, give a year to focus on just track and being a runnng back as well as learning the offense then turn this kid loose. Imagine a him, duke johnson, philip dorsett, and corn elder all on the field together that is a frightening proposition for opposing defense considering the slowest person in that group is Duke.

I don't know what our plans for him are physically (I know he's gonna start at LB) but I think it'd be a waste to bulk him up and hurt his track ability.

He is way to small to play LB at 215lbs, remember what KSU Qb did our 220 lbs, and logan thomas is still around, not to mention Taj Boyd at clemson. An those yes in the past UM had some small backers but they played in a different system then what UM runs now. Tyrone Corneilous can barely get on the field and he is talented but to light in the pants unfortunately, this why I feel tucker will be used on offense. However I will say this he does need a red shirt year if possible to trully be coached up as a RB to use his vision, because based on his HS film he would rather run someone over then try to break outside to turn the corner. This was also Mike James Problem he would run with hs head down, and miss the cut back lane that could allow for him to break a long run. Tucker has the speed but needs to develop the vision and offensive knowledge to be another Lamar Miller 8-). Remember Lamar also redshirted to develop his game.

SHOCKER, another swing and a miss.

How big was Sean Spence?

Is every QB a tremendous beast? Why not Russell Wilson? Boyd at Clemson is 6'1 225 and he is in his 5th year at Clemson, who we don't play this year on the regular season schedule. Somehow, I expect Walker to redshirt (even if he is not on scholarship) and this means nothing because Logan Thomas and Boyd will be gone before he steps on the field.

Tyrone Cornelius can barely get on the field for 2 reasons, 1. He isn't very good and 2. There are better people ahead of him. Are you really standing there in your tin foil hat saying he can't get on the field because of his size?

Amazing stuff!

Spence is a competely different case his football IQ allowed him diagnosis plays quickly and avoid blockers and oh yeah spence got run over a few times don't kd yourself. I am merely saying Tucker makes a much better RB then LB. Okay let me ask you this what do thnk Mo Hagens would do to this kid in an Oklahoma drill, it would X-rated and there are several situations in game where that scenario would come up. Now putting him at safety maybe but UM has a few good recruits already and that is a big transition. I mention Boyd becuase i expect UM to play Clemson in the ACC title game.

But this question will be answered this summer.

Then say that and cut with the BS.

Oh no the Oklahoma Drill, Mo Hagens (Sr Fullback) versus a Freshman Tucker. Gee, I wonder. Probably what most kids that are 4 years older and in a program for 4 years do to a undersized freshman...plant his a$$.

Not saying straight ahead speed is an indication of how a kid will run the ball, but I'd love to see what he can do with the ball in his hands. He is clearly an elite athlete. At 215 pounds, based solely on his size and athleticism, he could play running back when he arrives. I'm not advocating that he play right away just saying he has the build and speed. If he can catch the ball he'd be a complete nightmare for opposing defenses because he'd be too fast for most LBs and a physical mis-match for most CBs. Has anyone seen him play running back? How does he look with the ball in his hands? Hoping they give him a shot to run the ball because Duke, Elder, Gus, and this kid would make a lethal train of running backs/athletes, each bringing something a little different.

I think the kid should start at RB and Special teams...not really expecting much of him in football though tbh

hopefully i will be surprised

His coverage ability must not be very developed if they aren't looking to put him at safety which is too bad. 6-1, 220lb (range, who knows where he'll finish growing) who could flat out fly and isn't afraid to make contact would be a monster. Unfortunately all we really know is that he can flat out fly on the track. Haven't seen too much of his change of direction or pursuit and coverage ability. I am excited to see how he turns out and whether he stays at LB.

Paranos the kid is starting out at LB, you can't change that

Where are you getting that from last I read he was going to try both RB & LB based EVERY ARTICLE I HAVE READ and my contacts. Then settle in where he can most effective, I was offering my opinion as to where he would project the best which is on Offense. So if you can provide some definitive reference that states he will start out exclusively at LB it would be appreciated.

Alonso Highsmith was a DE until Schnells saw his speed and athleticism. Give Tucker a look. Can't hurt.

LULZ at a few things:

1. 9.20 leg;

2. Paranoid and all the other guys who, when presented with examples of LBs who aren't 250 lbs., brush off the examples of guys like Spence and Beason, etc. by saying "those were different times" or "those guys were different because they were different" or some other dopey nonsense.

3. Paranoid is now a fake insider referring to his "sources" just because one of the 23339 recruits he has mentioned got offered by UM.

I don't give a **** about his track ability. He'll be on football scholarship. Track will be a hobby.
