Haven't really heard any in-depth discussion so far this week about the VT game besides how big of a game it is.

Has anyone had a chance to watch most of VT's games? What are their strengths and weaknesses.

Going to love the Thursday night atmosphere for the game and the national exposure; even though the NFL hijacked Thursdays. KC @ San Diego isn't the most enticing of match-ups but most people will still probably we watching that.

Logan Thomas was streaky and inconsistent last year as well.

That is until he played us and we made him look like a future NFL #1 draft pick and Heisman front runner.

VT has been a thorn in our sides since 1995. This season will be no different. Our offense is a mess right now and Bud Foster is one of the best in the business at his craft.

I predict a real dog fight next week, hope that we can finally pull one out and finish strong.

I really thought that we would be showing more improvement this season from game one till now.

The improvements have been very small, time for our kids to grow up and our coaching staff to begin earning their paychecks.

The last few games, I have seen progression from our defense. Hopefully, that continues.

Unfortunately, right when the defense starting learning stuff, the offense has been regressing.

If the offense can just take a couple steps forward, and the defense continue to progress, we shouldn't lose.

The bye is huge for us, allows some guys to get healthy, and hopefully continue work on the defense. VT has won some games with deep ball to M. Davis as he is a burner, but as has been mentioned L. Thomas is streaky as ****, probably more so than S. Morris.

This is most definitley a game we can win, we need to contain Thomas and limit their shots down field.

Completely agree. It's the O we have to worry about. The O is wearing out the D

Unfortunately Tech has a bye this week also so no adv there but hopefully Duke and Morris will be better.

I live here in Blacksburg. I have seen most of their home games up close. Here is my two cents:

Logan Thomas is struggling this year, but mainly due to banged up inexperienced OL. They have a 3rd string center starting, and now every OL they have practices snapping at practice in case he goes down.

Their DL isnt special and can be pushed around, BUT they make occasional stops when necessary to keep them in games and they decent amount of experience there. Gayle at DE will most certainly be all over the field but I feel with our OL, that matchup should be a wash.

At WR, Davis #7 is huge and athletic, but he's by no means Vincent Jackson. His game is all physical, and the rest of their WR's have decent size as well in the legit 5'11 - 6'1. Keeping Gunter opposite McGee would be smart as Gunter seems to have come on as of late.

At RB, they are currently going by committee. No studs here, but they do have very young talent. Tony Gregory, is as fast as anyone on the UM roster, but he runs with no vision and is easily hurt. Holmes, is a bigger back who rarely gets touches, but from what i've seen is the more complete of the 3. Finally the true Frosh JC Coleman. This kid is the big play threat if given space. He doesn't create his own opportunities but does exploit a lack of containment. He gets to the edge, he's GONE, plain and simple.

At LB, most know Bruce Taylor is their monster at mike, but lately he has been sidelined due to tech's inability to stop spread-type offenses. They have been going with soph Jack Tyler who isn't terribly athletic but savvy enough to annoy offenses. TRUST by the end of the game, we will know his name. They also rotate at the WILL spot, but these guys are their tweeners. All athletic but nothing special, but they play hard.

At DB, Kendall Fuller is the household name nationally, but he's been getting torched lately due to lack of pass rush. His natural position is S but has been playing corner because they have no experience there. Safety is a position we can exploit IMO. Exum is good but he too often takes his eyes of responsibility and WR's get behind. He makes up for it with speed but against a Dorsett(if he catches the ball), this should be a mismatch all day down field.

ST: Well the coverage has NOT been the best on either team, but as usual, they have a decent PK in Journell, but the place I think we can get them is on punt block. The kid back there is young, and sometimes gets spooked against a good rush. Mixing up the heat could get us a big play or better field position if we get him rattled. It has happened a few times before.

Overall: Logan Thomas is streaky. If the D plays half as good as it played against FSU, their OL will get rattled, and sacks will most definitely be there. This is a game UM MUST and CAN win. Losing this game would come to a lack of a vertical passing game, as that is their Achilles heel on D. We just need to dial back in, and go to work

GO CANES!

I truly believe VT will play their best game of the season against us. I expect a War.

We need our players healthy and confident (Morris, Duke, Perryman and Porter).

We lose to VT and I am just about done believing anything Golden says. It's time to show me something Alfred.

Nice breakdown, VASoul. I was going to write-up something similar. I'm a little further south in VA, back towards TN in coal country, and I am surrounded by VT engineering grads at my office so I'm always hearing tidbits from them as most of them attend all the VT home games. I would have written very much the same stuff you did. Plus, in order to keep up with the enemy--I try to watch and root against VT every single facking time they play.

The only thing I'll add is that we need to make sure to tackle these ****'s. They don't quit running on contact against anybody, and we've given up plays to other teams by not wrapping up--and that will come into play more than anything when we get pressure on Logan Thomas. When we get back there, we don't need to grab an ankle and wait for help--we have to get home and put him DOWN. If we don't do that, he sheds the tackler and scrambles for big gains. I watched him spin out of a sack against Clemson last week and promptly complete a pass with the defender hanging off of his left leg. The officials effed up and said he was in the grasp and the play was whistled dead, but if not for their *****-up, he would have hit the RB out of the backfield for about 30 yards on the play.

We need to be ready.. Im sure VT has a bitter taste in their mouth with Lockhart and Blue's last second commitment to UM. I hope our boys are ready for a fight cause I'm sure this game has been circled for awhile in Blacksburg...

Christiansburg/Blacksburg are the only places I have been given the "bird" with the vehicle decked out in Canes. Beautiful area for sure (sans the ********).

We are the cure for a struggling dual threat QB, that's for sure.

We've been better but our offense is going to have to snap out of it or we will lose. We are going to need at least 24 points IMO, and Mike James is going to have to have a **** of a game.

I haven't seen a single VT game this year, but that description sounds a lot like us.

Reading VASOULCANE's breakdown, I was thinking the same thing. Good...but inconsistent play.

Anyone who doesn't expect a dogfight is kidding themselves.
