Kheylan Martin-Brown and Dylan Reid are both 2022 linebackers for Chaminade who started this past season as sophomores. I am going to combine them for this Underclassman Spotlight because they are very similar in multiple ways. Both are listed at 5’11’’ 195 pounds and play fast and physical. Martin-Brown finished the year with 87 tackles and five tackles for loss. Reid, despite missing three games, totaled 77 tackles, five tackles for loss, and three sacks. Chaminade is going to have two of the best linebackers in South Florida for the next few years.
While Martin-Brown and Reid do have similarities, they also do some unique things. Reid plays the more traditional middle linebacker role while Martin-Brown plays in coverage more often. Reid excels at finding the ball, and he makes the offensive player feel it every time he gets hit. Once Reid diagnoses the play he shows tremendous short-area speed getting to the ball carrier.
Martin-Brown does play in the box often, but he also drops into coverage multiple times every game. Martin-Brown has great top-end speed for a linebacker. He chases down running backs and receivers on the back end of the defense with ease. He is also more than serviceable when playing in the box and stopping the run.
Projecting to the next level, both of these players have a skill set that can translate to the college game. However, some schools would be hesitant to offer a linebacker shorter than six feet tall. Nonetheless, both of these players are going to be some of the best linebackers in South Florida for the next few years and will be playing at the next level somewhere.
