After taking a Thanksgiving break last week, we are back with another edition of Underclassman Spotlight. This week we are going to stay in South Florida and head up to Palm Beach Central to check out OLB/DE Griffin Lampton. Lampton has good size at 6’4’’, 214 pounds and always plays with a high motor. Lampton is a dominant force on the field every time that he suits up. Whether it’s as a pass rusher or as a run defender, Lampton can do it all.
Lampton is one of the most complete defensive ends in South Florida in the 2020 class and his on field performance showed that this past season. Although Palm Beach Central did not meet their goal of winning states this year, they did make it to the regional finals, and Lampton was a big part of that. He finished the year with 18 sacks, 71 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, four pass break ups, and he also recovered a fumble which he returned for a touchdown. This performance was enough to land Lampton on 1st team all-county this past season.
As a pass rusher, Lampton is just too fast for the tackles that he goes against. There have been countless times this year that the offense tackle is just left blocking air because Lampton is past them before they are even out of their stance. As a run defender, Lampton will obviously need to get into a college weight room but that is the case with everybody. Lamptons size is not a concern to me at all, especially when you look at the guys in the 2019 class. Miami commit Jahfari Harvey from Vero Beach is the same height as Lampton, but only has 9 pounds on him despite being a year older. The size will come in due time and Lampton has the frame to add the necessary weight.
Lampton already had a decent amount of attention from colleges going into this season with offers from schools like Oregon and Kentucky, and I expect that list to grow as his junior tape starts to make the rounds. Lampton visited Notre Dame earlier this month when the Fighting Irish took on Florida State. More big name schools will start coming after Lampton soon so Miami needs to pull the trigger sooner rather than later. Since Elijah Roberts decommitted from Miami, the Canes need to expand their defensive end board; Griffin Lampton would be a good place to start.
