2021 Miami Northwestern TE Kahlil Brantley has already had an interesting path to becoming a Hurricane commit and he’s not even a junior yet. When he didn’t get a Miami offer as early as he would have liked, Brantley simply kept his head down and kept working. Eventually, the Canes came through and Brantley knew Miami is where he wanted to be, committing to the staff 2 weeks back soon after his offer.
“Well, as everybody knows, I’ve been waiting on this offer since I started playing high school ball as an 8th grader,” Brantley said of Miami. “At one point, I felt that I wasn’t good enough to play at Miami, so I started to work and build myself up to where I am now. I’ve been dreaming of being a Cane since I was a kid, so I wasn’t trying to waste any time on this commitment.”
Without his Hurricanes offer, Brantley instead made an early commitment to the Utah Utes in October. However, when the UM offer came in, Brantley knew he had rushed things, and decided to flip to the school he always felt he belonged at.
“I think that I was moving a little too fast by committing to the University of Utah,” Brantley said. “I didn’t know what I was getting myself into and what I was doing to my recruiting process. But when I stepped on campus at Miami two weeks ago, I had gotten the best news of my life and that was that I had been offered by my dream school. I couldn’t be more thankful and I worked for it.
“A few days later, I decided to de-commit from the University of Utah and commit the university I really wanted to be at and that was Miami. I couldn’t be any more proud of myself, but the work doesn’t stop here.”
Attending the junior day event at UM a few weeks back, Brantley got to see all the excitement of Miami landing 5 new commitments, and felt it was emblematic of the energy new head coach Manny Diaz has brought to the program.
“When I saw everybody committing, it seemed like everybody was feeling the vibe and the greatness in the making of ‘The New Miami’,” Brantley said.
UM wants to use Brantley’s skillset all over the field as an H-Back, fullback, and lining up in the slot in OC Dan Enos’ offense. Brantley has grown considerably in the past year and a half and is now closer to 6’3” 220 pounds, describing himself as a hard worker and versatile threat.
“Miami is getting a dog, a dominating blocker, a **** of a catching tight end/wide receiver/fullback and a humble hard-working player,” Brantley said.
The Miami Northwestern star has received plenty of early recruiting attention and chose the Canes over offers from Oregon, Syracuse, and Missouri to name a few. While he doesn’t rule out seeing other schools, Brantley seems pretty set with the Hurricanes.
“I will still take visits to other schools, but in my opinion, Miami is where it’s at,” Brantley said.
With 9 commitments, Miami's class of 2021 has both quality and quantity, and is considered the early #1 overall class according to 247Sports. Of his classmates, Brantley says that the future Canes will be a group to be feared by opponents.
“We’re straight dawgs, the class 2021 commits are animals,” Brantley said. “I hope that they stay committed and come to ‘The U’.”
When talking about what the future holds for his freshman year at Miami, Brantley is ready to make an immediate impact.
“I just want to earn playing time because I know there are gonna be some guys in front of me,” Brantley said.
And what message does he have for the UM fans that have followed his recruitment?
“Through the ups and downs, I hope you guys are still with me because I’m going to give you my all.”
