Wondering how our defense matches up against UF offense. Wanted to watch what they look like so deciddwd to compare their opponents to our defense. Looked at our defensive stats:
Total Defense: 347.1 yards per game
Points Allowed: 22.3 ppg
Rush Defense: 140.8 rushing yards per game
Pass Defense: 206.3 passing yards per game

Seems the two teams that match our defense are
South Carolina
346.9 total yards per game
22.7 ppg
142.1 rushing yards per game
204.8 pass yards per game

Arkansas:
350.2 yards per game
21.9 ppg
139.7 rushing yards per game
210.5 passing yards per game.

It appears that both teams run a 4-2-5 but I'm no expert.

Florida beat South Carolina 41-39 and lost to Arkansas 39-36 in OT.

Yes our defense should be better than last year. And yes Cam should be good for a TD per game better on offense. But that's all we got at the moment. Might be a close game. 😬

Will be one of the 3-4 best offenses we face all year, in Game 1 with a lot of new faces. Gonna be a challenge, but we'll be ready.

Where I think we have a much bigger advantage is the Miami offense vs the gator defense. If we are humming even close to full speed right out the gate, we should be able to score 30 on these dudes. I'm not quite sure they can get to that number on our defense without major help (massive coverage busts, penalties, big turnovers etc).

But Mertz is OK and doesn't make a lot of mistakes. He won't give us the game, most likely.

Most likely, but Bain, Baron and Co. will take it from him.

Werent they trying to focus on Mertz throwing down field more in spring camp? If so...we win big.

Week 1 is always weird. It takes teams and especially units real live bullets to gel. We could be a much different defense by week 8 than we will be during week 1. Anyway, my concern is Mertz is legit (20 TDs/3INTs) and extremely accurate (73% completion rate last year). However, he does tend to take a good amount of sacks and can't run which is a big plus for our defensive line. This will be a tight game and will likely come down to turnovers, penalties, tackling etc.

Mertz likely won't give us the game, but won't win it for them either. Control their running game and limit Mertz to his usual dink and dunk passing game and we should be good. If our offense gets a two score lead they aren't built to play catch up.

While those stats are legit, they are also the product of Mertz being very safe and limited in his passing. Easy to complete at that percentage and throw few INTs when the overwhelming majority of your throws are short outs and check downs.

That offense lost 3 of their best players from last year and sounds like they might be without their 4th. That's a lot to make up. Plus our DL will be much better than last year.

I actually think Mario's mongoloid gameplan would do well for this game. We are flat out superior.

Get pressure with front 4. Make Mertz be perfect. Control TOP. Take big plays when they present themselves. Only way it's close is if we press & turn the ball over. Pour it on in 4th qtr! Be petty. Lol

Agreed. If the defense does a good job tackling and not allowing the short passing game and run game to lead to big plays, we should be able to overwhelm them with our offense.

This is where player rotation can get bad. We kept a ton of players from last year and we have the same coordinators from last year.
