Interesting observation as we start fall camp, 2013.
As manifest proof that Golden has us ‘turning the corner’, just take a look at our list of 2013 recruits. It appear as if it will number about twenty (20).
But, of those 20 guys, about 2/3 of ‘em will get the luxury of a redshirt year to grow and mature. The days of a young, undersized kid being forced into the fire for O.J.T. as a result of team necessity are over!
The only sure contributors I see this year are as follows:
B Sandland JC
A.Figueroa
Kamalu
S. Coley
O’Donnell
Julio Derosier
D. Gilbert
Agustus Edwards (?) (Depends on Clements & Dillard)

I think most, if not all of the following will get a ‘shirt, except those with a question mark, although some may see special team duty.
Gall
Knighton
Olsen
Odogwu
Tucker
J. Carter
Gall
Dobard
Lewis, Jr
Elder
Edwards (?)
AQM (?)
Grace (?)
Burns (?)
We're turnin' the corner, and the future looks bright. It's a process!

I'm iffy on Elder. He needs to put on weight so I think he'll shirt. I was leaning towards him not shirting because of his potential return ability, but I think we have enough athletes where we won't need to burn his shirt for return duties only.

Jamal Carter is an interesting name. He's physically ready to play now. I think if he picks up the playbook fast enough he'll get some burn this year. Probably towards the middle of the year more so than the beginning.

Also re: 2013 commits that'll contribute early, only 2 of the names on your list are straight out of high school. Figs went to prep for a year and O'Donnell is a senior transfer.

This is how champions are built, and next season even more will redshirt. The future is bright my friend.

I think the following will not red shirt:
Gus Edwards
Sunny Odogwu
Stacy Coley
Beau Sandland (Jr)
AQM
Alex Figueroa
Jermaine Grace
Artie Burns
Jamal Carter

Closer to 1/2 will dress and contribute.

Only Figs will be a starter, the others will get some playing time, but play on specials and in blow outs.

I think Sunny will shirt.

We have 4 tackles in front of him. He'll need time to develop and adjust IMO.

"Turdin' the Corner" would have been a better title. Think about it next time.

Should not RS Carter or Burns due to ability and lack of quality depth at positions.

Grace and AQM should not RS for the same reason.

I'd rather see Carter and even Tolson in at safety over Rodgers and Highsmith.

Them boys suck (for different reasons).

Rodgers and Highsmith are both solid backup safetys. The more burn they get, the more likely we are to give up big plays. As long as they are role players this year we should be OK on that front.

What ABSOLUTELY drives me BONKERS about Rodgers is he is a heady player. He is ALWAYS in decent position to make a play. He only really got burnt a few times last year. Problem is, when the ball gets close his brain shuts down. He has no idea how to make a play on it and he probably isnt sure that an interception is a real stat.

Vs FSU last year im sitting in the stands and I see Rodgers deep. I say to my dude, "watch Rodgers on this play, they are gonna pick on him".
Sure enough, Manual throws some crap ball right to Rodgers and Kacey cant make a play on it and FSU gains about 40 yards.

Granted, in the last 4 games you could visibly see improvement in his game, but he is still a very average "mid-major" caliber type of safety. He COULD improve and have a good year this season, but im not going to hold my breath, although I will be happy as a clam if that comes to fruition.

Derosier and Kamalu can't redshirt so might as well throw them out there and see what we've got

Forgot about Kamalu & fixed it. This thread is just to give us something to think about as camp progresses. But, obviously, a lot will depend upon the progress of the upperclassmen in front of these newbies.

i agree with the OP, but the test is really on-field results. in most "state of the U" press conferences or questions, Golden has always said that there is a lot of room for improvement or we are still dealing with off the field issues, or fill in the blank. this is the perhaps the first time that I hear him say that there is maturity and good leadership, that there are no real distractions, that they are focused, that there is competition at every position, that they are finally in real shape etc. this is the progress that all of us have been pining for.

i am certain (hopeful?) that all of the above will parlay into on the field improvement including more wins and meaningful wins.
