Discussing homosexuality in pro football and Brandon Ayambendejo (sp), a caller mentioned this as an accepted fact re: why Tmack was released years ago. Clearly alcohol was his major problem but there were rumblings I remember. (not that there's anything wrong with that).

I guess no one else heard this, but I was pretty surprised by the comment. It was a caller on Sedano's show

Funny. I just happened to come across some old newspaper articles from around 1977, when track athlete Maxwell Voce publicly accused one of our WRs, a former big time recruit, of being ***. That WR was then accused, along with Jeffrey Taylor, and a few others, of attacking Voce at his apartment. Jeffrey Taylor was not the one accused, he just went with the teammate. You can guess who the WR is, I don't feel like mentioning names. (He, incidentally, was suspended by Butch for a year for attacking Voce.)

I think it was Voce, or somebody who didn't like the WR, of continually making snide remarks about his manhood on Grassy, back in the early days. From time to time I read articles about NFLers who have come out, like Dave Kopay, and maybe that former TE, Jerry Smith, so it is not surprising that, given the thousands who have played major college football, and the thousands who have played in the NFL, that there have not been at least a few.

I hate to say it, and I don't want to be thought of as a bigot, but it might make me a bit uncomfortable to be in a locker room situation with ****, but there's no reason for them not to play sports, including contact sports. I'm sure there are more than a few that have. If anybody's offended, I'm sorry. About twenty years ago I used to be a member of a health club in mid-town Manhattan, and I'm coming out of the shower and there were two guys not too far away who were semi-dressed and kissing. I did not feel comfortable. I think they should at least keep that private, not in a lockerroom.

Its been talked about. If a guy like Ray Lewis or Adrian Peterson came out of the closet, 32 NFL teams would take him. Its the fringe roster guys that would have to worry. If you are a replaceable role player, a team would avoid you just for the sake of avoiding a media circus and the risk of wierding teammates out.

I'm 100% for *** rights but I can understand the business decision of a team wanting to avoid the situation all together. Progress takes time. As annoying as the corny commercials and espn fluff pieces are, it takes a generation or two to really change a culture and guys like Ayanbadejo (Sp) are working on something important and it takes a lot of courage.

I've always wondered what the impact of one elite athlete coming out. It's been mostly fringe guys here and there, I think it will take a star to really get the show rolling, but I think as an athlete, and also as a person, the attention it would bring would be so detrimental to your career and focusing on your craft, that it would really be making a huge personal sacrifice for the cause.

Everything in due time. Most of my generation, (I'm 22) Is pro *** rights or at least just doesn't care too much about it. So I'm sure our children's children will grow up in a world where **** are much better off than they are now. And even though that isn't as fast as some people would like, Its something.

Better off? Will all the media attention and social promotion they get they are practically cultural icons.

Oops there I go again, not being one of the cool kids. [am standing by for the standard responses]

If you play football and like ****, you better be very good. Otherwise, at the end of the day, you will only be known for liking ****. but I guess today that is a status symbol.

You have to wonder if his alcoholism was related to him trying to repress his homosexual feelings to try and fit in on a football team

I am sure that the *** players that are in organized sports are already known to heir teammates. Like German who was openly *** and no one ever cared.

I was wondering if this would ever come to light. But I could remember he was messing around with one of male classmates at South Miami Sr. High. They were always together and we even caught them kissing. But who cared as long as he did thing on the field.

Obviously the two guys mentoned above didn't go that HS. Should we rename this the CIS outing thread.

There was a discussion on Lebatard's show that getting 20-30 players in all the pro sports coming out together would have more effect to get all sports involved (evolved?).FWIW Ricky Williams had told him no *** player could come out in the NFL.

I could care less, they're still Canes, just Canes that love balls in their face
