Top 15 performers at the New Level Athletics Space Coast Shootout
Rockledge, Fla. -- The national 7-on-7 circuit kicked off with the New Level Athletics Space Coast Shootout over the weekend. The two-day event brought in teams from all over the country in what was a high energy, and very competitive tournament.
The fields were littered with tomorrow's stars playing for teams that have filled today's college football heavy hitters. Florida is the hotbed for such events, and New Level Athletics was the originator of the 7-on-7 circuit, so it had the makings of an elite level event. It didn't disappoint. With so many top prospects on hand, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune was in attendance. Here are the weekend's top performers.
1. Kevin Toliver, CB, 6-2, 180, Trinity Christian, Jacksonville, Fla., LSU-commitment, 2015
Even though he was younger than a lot of others in attendance, there was not a more impressive defensive back on hand. When matched up with highly rated 2014 wide receiver prospect Ermon Lane, Toliver absolutely took him out of the game by jamming him at the line and riding his hip throughout the play. Easily one of the most impressive defensive back prospects in attendance.
2. Isaiah Ford, WR, 6-2, 175, Trinity Christian, Jacksonville, Fla., 2014
Ford completely deserved the No. 1 spot on production alone. He was virtually unstoppable throughout the event and won nearly every rep against highly recruited University School defensive back, Quincy Wilson from Davie, Fla. during an elimination game. He has 12 offers right now, but more are certainly on their way.
3. Shawn Burgess, WR, 6-2, 190, Monarch, 2015
Burgess came into the event relatively unknown, but after a completely dominating performance from start to finish, that should change immediately. He would have been the top offensive player on the list, but Isaiah Ford was targeted far more throughout the weekend. Burgess is most experienced as a safety, but he certainly has the tools to be a five-star caliber receiver as well. He does not have an offer, yet, but expect that to change with many schools calling to inquire about his services over the past day or so. Burgess was the most impressive prospect at the event.
4. Marquese Dudley-Gordon, S, 6-0, 195, Cypress Bay, 2014
Dudley was one of the better performers on Day 1, but slipped a hair on Day 2. He was the most consistent of the Florida Fire defenders despite not having an offer prior to the event and playing in a secondary that was loaded with FBS prospects. His success quickly translated to increased interest. San Diego State offered him after reports surfaced of his first-day success.
5. Antoine Griffin, WR, 5-9, 160, Cocoa Beach, Fla., 2014
Griffin is another receiver that demanded a lot of attention. He torched defenses throughout the two-day event. He isn't that big or fast, but he knows how to get open and catches everything thrown his way. He was the MVP of the event last year and was equally impressive this time around.
6. Johnnie Dixon, WR, 5-11, 185, Dwyer, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., 2014
With offers from some of the top programs in the South -- like Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State and Miami -- there wasn't any question about his ability coming into the event. Once play got underway, it became very apparent that he is deserving of many more offers as well. When the ball is in his hands, he is very elusive and can make people miss in tight spaces.
7. Ermon Lane, WR, 6-2, 200, Homestead (Fla.), 2014
With so many top prospects in attendance, it was hard for guys to separate themselves from the pack, but not so much for Lane. He was often dominant and may have been rated higher if he had been as consistent on Day 2 as he was on Day 1. During a heated contest between the South Florida Express and Pro Impact, 2015 LSU-commitment Kevin Toliver took him completely out of the game, which caused Lane to drop a little on the list. Nevertheless, he was one of the most impressive prospects in attendance and told Rival.com's Woody Wommack that five schools stand out: Alabama, Florida, LSU, Miami and Georgia.
8. C.J. Worton, WR, 5-11, 170, Homestead (Fla.), 2014, Florida State-commitment
Worton was instrumental in leading his Hard Knocks team to the title this past weekend. His explosiveness and knack for making the big play was quite impressive. Worton is not the biggest receiver, nor is he the biggest name, but he is certainly one of the best receivers in the region. He suffered what is believed to be a meniscus tear in his knee on Sunday and barring any setbacks from rehab, he should become a household name when all is said and done.
9. Ed Paris, CB, 6-1, 190, Mansfield HS, Arlington, Tex., 2014, LSU-commitment
Paris played well despite never practicing with the Mississippi BKS All-Atars, his new team. In press-coverage, he showed the technique and strength to stymie receivers as they tried getting off the line. There were some times that he struggled against some of the smaller receivers, but he played well overall. His combination of size, speed and strength make him a big-time cornerback prospect.
10. Lashard Durr, CB, 6-0, 180, Harrison Central HS, 2014
There were very few corners in attendance that compared to Durr. He has great length, speed, quickness, strength and plays with an aggressive nature. Due to his success locking down receivers throughout the weekend, he gave up very few completions. He has yet to receive his first offer but, after notching a passing score on his ACT test recently, that should change. Without question, he is a BCS caliber prospect.
11. Brandon Garner, LB, 5-11, 200, Mansfield HS, Arlington, Tex., 2014, Purdue-commitment
It is difficult for linebackers to make a splash at events like this, but Garner excelled on both sides of the ball throughout the weekend. In coverage, he showed a lot of fluidity and the understanding of angles and depth in his drops. When on offense, he showed really good ball-skills and even got open with his high school teammate Ed Paris covering him on multiple occasions.
12. Kain Daub, LB, 6-3, 240, Sandalwood HS, Jacksonville, Fla., 2014
After struggling at times in 7-on-7 events last year, Daub showed improved footwork and quickness, which allowed him to be a lot more effective this time around. He is a physical specimen and had no problems forcing receivers to pay a toll to enter his zone. His strength is certainly as a downhill defender that loves to hit, but his improved ability in coverage only makes him that much more valuable. The one time LSU-commitment said that he is really liking Florida State and Alabama right now.
13. Devin Adams, QB, 6-2, 220, Vigor HS, Mobile, Ala., 2014
Coming into the event, Adams didn't have any offers. He was supposed to take a visit to Auburn over the weekend, but he chose to play in the 7-on-7 tournament instead. Once the tournament started it was quite apparent that Adams had as many tools as the more highly recruited quarterbacks in attendance.
14. Jacques Patrick, ATH, 6-2, 225, Timber Creek, Orlando, 2015
Patrick missed Day 1 because of a track meet, but when he showed up on Day 2, he made his presence felt immediately. Playing mostly running back in high school, many were not aware of his abilities as a receiver. He was consistently beating defenders across the middle and just flat out running by them to get deep. With 21 offers to date including LSU and Alabama, look for Patrick to make big waves on the trail when his time comes.
15. Juwan Dowels, CB, 5-10, 170, Western HS, Davie, Fla., 2014
This pesky corner was a pest for receivers all weekend. He has tremendous quickness and breaks on the ball very well. While he is a little undersized, he makes up for it with good natural strength and a warrior's mentality. He has offers from Ball State, Cincinnati, Louisiana-Lafayette, South Alabama and Western Michigan. That list should grow as Dowels makes his presence felt on the camp circuit.
