NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - The South Florida Express 7-on-7 team held their sixth annual tryout and workout over the weekend at the North Campus of Florida International on Biscayne Bay. As is the case every year, the tryout for the most talented 7-on-7 team in the country brought out many of the top skill prospects in the classes of 2014 and 2015.
Five-star running back Sony Michel led the way overall during the weekend's South Florida Express tryouts. He named a top five Monday of Georgia, Notre Dame, Miami, Florida and Florida State in no order.
Among the more than 250 prospects on hand were 2014 five-star running back Sony Michel (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./American Heritage), the nation's current top 2014 wide receiver Ermon Lane (Homestead, Fla.) and a very impressive group of 2015 defensive backs that included Tyrek Cole (Miramar, Fla.), Jaquan Johnson (Miami/Killian) and Tavarus McFadden (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./American Heritage).
Here's a look at the top 10 performers from the event.
1. Sony Michel, RB, Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) American Heritage
The 5-foot-10.5, 203-pound Michel was on hand Saturday and took part in the workout. He looked to be in tip top shape, as he usually does and zipped through running back drills with quick feet and terrific balance. More than just a threat as a runner, the five-star prospect caught the ball naturally throughout the day. Georgia, Notre Dame, Miami, Florida and Florida State are his current top five.
2. Tyrek Cole, CB, Miramar (Fla.)
The 5-foot-10.5, 165-pound class of 2015 cornerback was very good Saturday, but took his performance to another level Sunday. He was terrific all day in coverage, and was easily the best corner in coverage. He drew constant praise from defensive backs coach and former NFL corner Sam Madison. Cole re-routed in press coverage consistently, and did the best job of getting his head around and in position to play the ball in the air. Cole already has verbal offers from favorite Florida, Miami and West Virginia.
3. Ermon Lane, WR, Homestead (Fla.)
Lane was the most talented wide receiver prospect on hand, and that is saying quite a bit at the uber talented South Florida event. Before Lane ever showed his ability to get vertical effortlessly, he surprised physically. Lane has added around 10-pounds of very good weight since July, and is beginning to transition to a stronger appearance. Alabama, Miami and Florida State are the top three currently for the No. 39 ranked prospect in the 247Composite.
Class of 2015 defensive back Tavarus McFadden already has verbal offers from Florida State, LSU, Notre Dame and Ole Miss, among others.
4. Jaquan Johnson, DB, Miami (Fla.) Killian
The 5-foot-10, 175-pound class of 2015 defensive back worked out at corner on Saturday and Sunday, and more than held his own. He was physical in press coverage, flashed his excellent reactions and continues to show he has a natural feel for playing the ball with terrific ball skills. Johnson, who intercepted seven passes in 2012 and has 12 picks in two years on varsity, has verbal offers from Florida State, Florida, Miami, Clemson and others.
5. Tavarus McFadden, S, Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) American Heritage
The 6-foot-2.5, 180-pound class of 2015 prospect was on hand Saturday and the look of the long armed, rangy safety prospect that already has verbal offers from Florida State, LSU, Notre Dame, Ole Miss and others. McFadden's ability to quickly close ground from hash mark to boundary stands out.
6. Richard Yeargin III, OLB, Davie (Fla.) University School
Yeargin III was as impressive as any prospect on hand physically. The former Chaminade-Madonna linebacker has gone from around 205-pounds to more than 215-pounds since late in the summer, and has the frame and look of a future 250-plus pound defensive end. While Yeargin III will outside linebacker and shadow tight ends for the South Florida Express, his ability to play downhill and off the edge, his frame and lack of pure speed will likely put his hand on the ground in time. The class of 2014 prospect has offers from Tennessee, UCLA ,West Virginia, Clemson, Wisconsin and others.
7. Tyre Brady, WR, South Dade (Fla.)
The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Brady was very impressive both days. While Ermon Lane is the most physically gifted receiver in the 2014 class in South Florida, Brady is quicker and much more fluid with his initial movement getting off the line of scrimmage and into routes. Brady beat press coverage with ease both days creating an immediate advantage. Should Brady's academics improve, there is little doubt he will be a nationally recruited receiver.
8. Jordan Herrera, WR, Miami (Fla.) Killian
The class of 2015 prospect entered the weekend off the radar having had to sit out the 2012 season at Killian. Now eligible, look for the fluid and quick high school running back to become a nationally recruited wide receiver prospect in the next couple of years. Herrera worked out at wide receiver for the most part, and was among the most natural and gifted route runners on hand. Herrera is originally from California and lists Southern California as his dream school.
9. Jojo Robinson, WR, Miami (Fla.) Northwestern
The 5-foot-11.5, 175-pound Robinson is always one of the faster players at any event he attends, and that was the case of the weekend. The Florida State commitment was quick off the line and getting into routes easily beating press coverage. While Robinson is listed as a wide receiver, he could project on either side of the ball at the next level.
10. Chris Lammons, CB/ATH, Plantation (Fla.)
The 5-foot-9, 170-pound class of 2014 prospect was among the best at corner over the two day event. Lammons, who plays quarterback for Plantation out of necessity, was the most physical of the corners in press coverage, and flashed his quickness and 4.4 speed closing on the ball on numerous occasions. Ole Miss and Indiana have verbally offered with many more expected to follow in May.
