Thug U

All this talk about the word thug being a convenient PC way to use the N word got me thinking about how for quite some time now some fools like to call us Thug U. The book Raising Canes by Bruce Feldman does a good job of describing how racial issues played a part in this programs history. I think with this story about Sherman and the word thug getting so much air time, people will start to think twice about throwing around the term Thug U. thoughts?

America is too obsessed with black and white. I think we (they) classify something as black or white first before we even consider something. For some reason I never thought of the term Thug U being a "black" term. It was just the way the players (black and white and pink and green) carried themselves back then. Personally, I think who cares? I really wish America would get over their fear/hatred of color and just look at the person as an individual and not as a group. But that's going to be hard for a country like America to do unfortunately.

And I'm kind of amused by America's reaction to Sherman's excited outburst. The guy just made maybe the play to get to the Super Bowl and was excited as all get out. He calmed down, apologized and is getting ready to play in the Super Bowl. Get a grip and move on America. Sometimes America is the most constipated country in the world.

There is no question in my mind that he's correct. People have always wanted to act as though Miami recruited a different type of player than their school and labeled them "thugs".
I gotta admit I was stunned when I went to the '93 Sugar Bowl vs. Bama, the crap that Bama fans called Miami players was unreal.
I'll never forget being called "ni66er lover", because I was a Miami fan.

I'm sure if someone referred to a black athlete as a goon that would be racist too. It's a dumb argument. I am not dumb. I'm sure they're white people that hate people because of the color of their skin, as they're blacks that hate, too. I don't care which race you come from if you hate someone because of skin color, that person is a dumbass. But that doesn't mean every single thing has to be racist.

And for the record this national debate on the word THUG shows one thing...that WORDS do indeed matter. If I use coded language that my white colleagues understand and I use that language to talk about someone who is not like my colleagues, then I am indeed racists.

No one is talking about Richard Shermans actions, we can all agree that he should've waited to go in AFTER the dust settled...we are debating the THUG comments and how THAT is racists and implies solely black people.

While some people might try to use it in a racially directed manner, it does not mean the word has racial undertones unless someone specifically intends to use it that way. The problem is you can use any word you want as a racial undertone if you intend to use it that way. Its not about the word, its about the way you use it. Thug to me is not about race, its about your attitude.
