The School:

The school is faced with a tough decision and it has nothing to do with the contract (unless you want to post the contract i.e. the buyout clause) they gave to Al Golden through 2067.

It has to do with the school looked like SHlT HEADS via Nevin Shapiro. They brought in this guy and he was able to represent the school with dignity for his whole tenure and dealt with everything himself. The school won’t put him on the hot seat for this reason alone. Now I believe 2014 the gloves are off and in 2015 that would be the earliest something would happen (assuming no dramatic change in 2014).

With that being said, if Blake James is worth anything, he needs to make a decision for him AND force Al’s hand. I think he needs to force Al to find a DC who can run a defense solely on their own and tell Al to laissez faire on the D.

Al Golden:

Al is 44 years old and has been a Head Coach for 8 years. It is of my opinion that Al Golden is a smart man that wants to be a Head Coach for a long time. It is of my opinion that Al Golden is “hurt” by his team’s performance and he should be as the CEO. It is my opinion that Al Golden knows his friend has run out of rope and will only handicap Al if he chooses him over a long career.

I am going to assume that Al will not fire this guy before the season is over (and the bowl game) but…
If Al is directly running the D (i.e. he approves coach D’s game plan) then that is really bad. If Al is indirectly running the D (i.e. he hired coach D but let’s coach D run the show) it is still bad but not as bad. Let’s not debate this. Either way Al needs to take over the last 3 games (UVA, Pitt and Bowl Game) and start letting coach D apply for new jobs if Coach D would prefer to seek employment before being let go.

If Al is smart he finds someone to implement his culture but runs the D their way.

The Fans:

All we can do is hope for now. I will keep it simple, whether you want Al to “fire” this guy yesterday or you want Al to “fire” this guy after the season. The same thing must happen. You must make dramatic changes on defense and bring in new guys to fix this mess. All we can do is hope Al will make the right decision and get a new DC.

I have all but shut the door on this guy, the only way I would open it back up is if he makes this decision before next season.
If Al won’t cut coach D, then I am prepared for what we see NOW from this team till 2015 (the earliest Al will be let go IMO). Sure the talent will be upgraded but the same BULL SHlT will continue.

How the rest of the season will play out. My guess is we will win two disgusting games against UVA and Pitt. My guess is Al will fire him officially after some crud performance after the Bowl Game. Al will bring in another great recruiting class but this won’t fix what needs to be done. If Al wants to be an HC for a long time then he must act like a CEO and move on. If Al won't fire this guy, then Al isn't our answer at Miami.

Consigliere,

What makes you think that firing Dorito is the problem-solver? Your stance assumes that Al has a vastly different defensive philosophy. Do you honestly believe that if he fired Dorito that he is going to implement a totally opposite, 1 gap attacking scheme? I'm not trying to be facetious or start trouble with you as I normally do. I am legitimately asking.

I just don't see it as likely. Human nature says that someone isn't going to drastically change something they've literally been doing for decades of their coaching life.

What I think should happen - Fire coach D now. Let Barrow call the plays to see what he has for the last 3 games. Is Barrow going to be s position coach his whole career or will he move up? Give him 3 games. Worst case he does poorly and you bring in a new guy.

What I think will happen - coach D finishes the season and then behind closed doors either finds another job without officially getting fired or resigns. I don't think Golden flat out fires him but I think something happens where coach D leaves but its a clean turnover.

Coach Golden should be looking at resumes starting Monday for replacements though

Good stuff.

For me, the take about Al being connected to this defensive scheme is really a key question. I can say this; Al Groh is very highly regarded within the NFL/CFB coaching community as a top shelf X & O guy. Golden is one of his disciples. What's really interesting is that Al Groh is also considered one of the toughest SOB's to have to work for. His assistants have a tendency of hating their jobs while working for Al Groh. Im beginning to wonder if coach Golden learned some of the wrong stuff from coach Groh.

All this said, we're gonna see just how much of a CEO Al Golden is after this season. Coach Dorito is clearly outmatched by this job (in some manner or fashion, not sure exactly which). We will see not only IF coach Golden replaces him but also WHO he is able to land. $500K isnt exactly huge money for a D1 coordinator, so he will have to be judicious in his selection.

To answer the question for myself. Only prayer we have man. Al is not going anywhere for a couple years. He played the school like a fiddle with the NCAA stuff and got a nice contract extension out of the deal. I wish he was as good a coach as he is business savvy.

I think when Golden fires Dorito it will be a pretty clear signal that we are changing schemes, not simply changing coordinators. This is Golden's defense as much as it is Dorito's. By replacing Dorito he'll be essentially acknowledging his own scheme has failed and he is no longer confident it will achieve the needed results.

We'll be running something else next year. Some kind of 4-3 1 gap system that isn't as demanding on the LBs.

Yep. And there's no guarantee dorito will be gone. Golden seems mor loyal to him than anything else. YET PEOPLE MADE EXCUSES FOR THIS GUY AND STILL DO. BOTH **** FLAVORED DORITO AND GOLDEN.

I think you need to read a little closer, no disrespect.

First, I said the following on Al (just on Al): "All we can do is hope for now"..."I said I have basically shut the door on this guy."

Second, I don't care if Al is directly running the D or indirectly running the D. He needs to have his hands off the D. If Al wants to have his hands on the D then he may not be in coaching much longer. I think Al can be successful but only if he implements this change because I believe he is a great recruiter and can RUN a program. I don't think he is an X's and O's guru. I think when Coach D is gone, the D will see major changes in both scheme and coaching.

Human nature also says if something isn't working after long periods of trial and error, then to keep it is idiotic and you will be fired. This is a business, we're in the business of winning games. We're not winning games, Al will be given the business.

Third, firing coach D will be shutting the door on this scheme IMO. So when he is fired, I think the scheme will be gone. If firing coach D and implementing a new defense doesn't change the result (i.e. more wins) then Al will be gone too and we're back to where we were.

While I have no idea what the scheme is or care what it is (just keep the points off the board), I believe firing coach D will end this scheme's tenure. I believe firing coach D and bringing in the right guy are the only things that can potentially lead to Al having more success. While nothing is definitive, it can only help.

Good G-d, if we hire Al Groh, I will kill myself. He was fired by Paul "Forrest Gump" Johnson because his defenses couldn't stop The Art Institute of Saginaw.

I like Al Golden, I think he has incredible potential and if this recruiting class stays intact, that is really step 1 in putting us back on the map. I believe he has corrected quite a few things we were lacking, ie, S&C program, facilities, and overall direction of the program.

However..... if he cant see the defense is a putrid mess and doesn't make wholesale changes, I'm done. I wont donate or go to any more games. Not one iota from me. I got better things to do than watch that nonsense.
