I just wanted to put into perspective (for myself really). Just how deprived from difference makers this defence really is. I'm not sure how much falls on the players vs the staff. But interested to see what you guys agree / disagree with. This is NOT mean't to bash the players. They don't put themselves on the field, or choose to play out of position. Thoughts?

Tier 1 - College Playoff Caliber
1. Bain - He's the most disruptive DLineman Miami has had since Warren Sapp.
2. Barrow - He's the only DT that's causing any TFL's and has an incredible motor.
3. OJ - The only corner we have that has shown any man-to-man ability

Tier 2 - ACC Champion Caliber
4. Mesidor - Playing out of position making enough plays and does't make mistakes.
5. Wes - He plays fast and he's violent.

Tier 3 - ACC Caliber
6. Powell - Limited athlete. High IQ.
7. Kiko - Limited athlete. Low IQ. Unreal effort.
8. Baron - Looks like Tarzan Plays like Jane. Alston is much better imo

Tier 4 - ACC Back Up Caliber
9. Daryl Porter - Better on the outside. Looks to have lost confidence.
10. Dyoni Hill - Assuming he starts now... He's a movement behind on almost every play.
11. Harris - He's a SS that has made almost no impact plays in the run game and can't cover. Bad combo.

True. We need more difference makers like Gerald Willis, Jalen Philips, Greg Rousseau, etc. Honestly id take Jaquan Johnson back in a hurry. I would say move Wes down and move DP up.

I had a hard time with DP. I know he should be a level up but this year has been rough.

Wes might be a bias... i love the way he plays.

I opened the thread expecting Jovani Hoskins to be much higher ranked.

I’d put everyone of the defensive line ahead of every member of the secondary besides Frédérique.

Only one team has cracked 140 yards rushing against us.

Three teams have thrown for over 300 and Cal had 297.

I can find a way to agree with everything you said but Baron on Tier 2. I think he's been our worst dlineman by a wide margin since ACC play started
Every team schemes up getting the ball out on 3 step drops while we keep sending blitzes & playing man coverage. I’m not a Guidry hater but I don’t think we’re putting our players in the best position to succeed.

My issue is his penalties. Effort is there.

My biggest issue so far with Guidry aside from very slow adjustments and slow starts is Kiko getting so many reps. Need to get Popo & Chase more burn at MLB. And I think Zaquan is finally starting to put Harris into a backup role thank God. With Richard being hurt though I'm guessing Meesh might play more nickel and I'm not sure who gets more of his safety reps.

Chase should never ever receive meaningful snaps here. He almost blew a tire trying to cover the RB in space. It was painful to watch and not for the usual reason.

Great listing of our defensive players, the only possible shifts would be Wes moving down to Tier 3 (he gets lost in the red zone) and maybe Kiko to Tier 4. Good post

Kiko has taken a step back but he still makes lots of plays for this team and sometimes the DC/scheme does him no favors. To put him one on one outside with a scat back and no safety over the top is a crime and I’m not sure any backer in the country makes that play. Watching OBB student of the game he was 100% picked on another one of Duke’s TD’s.

We will see Markeith Williams more, Guidry was already talking about giving him more reps at CB before the Duke game, but whatever the case we’ll see him either at S or CB more going forward. I agree Kiko plays way too much. That was extremely difficult to watch Chase cover their RB but that was one play to be fair. Would like to see Cam Pruitt and Bobby Washington get more reps. Bobby Washington was in the game on Cal’s last scoring drive when Kiko made the game ending INT, so they are beginning to trust him more. Def want to see Popo more if he isn’t still hurt. I saw LB Alderman more against Duke.

I still believe Harris has the yips. But whatever the case we need Zaquan more. Harris is literally on skates out there, he plays totally scared and lost. He stays in a perpetual state of Recovery. He is never in an advantageous position on any play.

Put Markeith at FS, Porter back at outside CB, Powell at Nickel and Zaquan at SS. The safety play is squarely on Guidry, it’s his biggest failure this season. He has to fix it.
