As I posted in another thread. This was the kind of game we would have blown 2 years ago.
WE have HUGE holes on this team, and a crippling lack of leadership and experience. But you can SEE the fundementals of this team are NIGHT and DAY better than they were 2 years ago.
Tackling is 100% improved. Guys actually wrap up. I saw DBs making TACKLES today. SOLO Tackles!!! I thought I was dreaming. Guys were wrapping up and not allowing 20 yards after contact on every play.
Receivers are running good routes. They had a LOT of drops, but they were generally where they were supposed to be.
Blocking is MUCH improved. Receivers and backs are blocking downfield.
Conditioning is VASTLY improved over what it was 2 years ago. These guys can play 60 minutes of football. FOr the FIRST time in a DECADE, those FOUR fingers we hold up at the end of the 3rd quarter actually mean something again.
The defense is CONSTANTLY trying to create opportunties. Guys are stripping balls and creating turnovers like we havent in years.
Special Teams are much better. We contained them all day and won the field position battle.
THis team has some BIG issues. WE are painfully young, and the DL is a disaster. WE are going to lose a LOT of games this year. But you can see the framework of something REALLY special building here. THIS is what we should have been seeing with Shannon's first two years, with all those MNW guys and all the hype. Guys like Denzel, Duke, Hurns, Dorrsett, Flowers, Finnie, Howard, McGee, are actually IMPROVING, significantly. Morris looks like a new man. Kid has great poise and was very smart today.
Im not sold on this whole staff. Coach D I have some concerns about, as with Franklin. But I feel like Golden, if he can do his thing, and the NCAA doesnt crush us, we are a top 10 team in 1-2 years and back in the MNC hunt. This team is going to be SCARY when it gets older.
