It's the off season so I'm bored and wanted to do some research on our "Team Talent" compared to others. The best thing I could find was 247's college team talent composite rankings. Per the link below we came in 20th for last season. Now I recognize that our numbers are low (Qty 73) compared to most teams who had 80+ players. On top of that there's the proverbial South Fla 3 star vs anywhere else 4/5 star argument. But I feel like that number was a little low, I have a hard time believing that there were 19 teams more talented than we were last year. I expect that number to improve from 20th to somewhere in the 15 range next year based on the incoming class.

This also led me to think about how these numbers are flawed from a weight perspective. I mean you can have a bunch of 5 stars at db but if your o-line is filled with 2 stars then you're gonna have a very unbalanced team. I would love to see a composite score that weighs the talent at different positions. It would be nice to also have a score that would take into consideration player improvement/regression. And by that I mean there are plenty of low rated players who become impact players and should have higher scores and vice versa for high rated players expected to become stars.

I was just thinking it would be nice to have a more detailed team talent measuring stick. I get that no system will never be perfect but I feel like in this day and age we should be able to have a better public metric for arguments sake.

I like reading these kind of rankings just to have something to read and have a different perspective on rankings. I know they are flawed but its interesting nonetheless. One thing that I would like to see is a cumulative team output ranking. What I mean by that is what is each team recruiting each year star wise? When are those guys becoming starters? Where are they being drafted overall? How long is their NFL career if they had one? Etc. I know it would be extremely extensive but it would be interesting to see which schools are turning the most 2 or 3 stars into NFL talent and having productive careers compared to who is getting the most 5 stars and flaming out in college. So essentially you can see who the true football factories are. I'm sure we would be pretty **** high in that ranking.

There was a reason people said Golden's 2015 class would hurt us for 5 years. It was ranked 26.

From a talent rankings perspective, we won't rank near the top 10 until next season, when that class is out the door. You're right probably around 15 for this year.

I realize its an imperfect measure, but it shows how Richt wasn't exactly handed a great roster. Our talent is obviously improving, but we're still a year or two from being at an elite level. Where it really shows is in terms of depth. Our starting 22 is really good. But outside RB and WR, we don't have many high level backups

First let me say that in no way shape or form do I think we have as much talent as Bama or OSU.We are getting there but as long as bags are allowed to be dropped I doubt we ever get there,at least star wise.

BUT I see some fault with these rankings because we all know that S.Fla recruits for the most part are underranked mainly because there’s so many studs down there and they can’t rank them all 4-5 stars as it would throw the rankings geographically out of whack.

So the fact that most of our teams are normally made up of mostly S.Fla. Recruits, the same underranked recruits from year to year,Miami is going to be at a disadvantage in any ranking that is decided totally by stars.

Again I’m not saying we have the same type talent as a Bama or OSU but we in no way have the 20th most talent.

Jmho of course but an easy case to be made.

We were ranked based on 73 players in ship. Look at the numbers above us. That almost all have 85. These are probation numbers and total bull****.

Only thing I'd mention is that who goes to the NFL doesn't matter much regarding this type of ranking. We want to know how good a team is compared to other college teams, and while there's a correlation, the guys who make it in the NFL aren't always the best college players. How many times have we seen a Miami guy who didn't do much for us get drafted and perform well because he had NFL measurables? How many times have we seen a Heisman finalist/winner the NFL wasn't interested in or wanted at a different position?

NFL success is great as a recruiting tool, but I'd rather have great college players than great NFL players (if I had to choose). I'd take Charlie Ward over Joe Flacco, but the NFL disagrees. I'd take Johnny Manziel in college, never in the NFL. Ok, maybe as a 5th rounder, but you get my point.

I think we should be at least top 15 once we have a full 85 schollys on campus. Hopefully by 2020 we get there.

Hard to believe so many SEC teams are more talented than us. It’s definitely the depth, mainly from Shapiro and Golden, that drags us so far down. Gotta fix that this class once and for all.

At least we’re #1 in Coastal so have a clear shot to a good season, based solely on this metric.

You missed Clemson and I don’t fully count ND since they’re not assigned to a division.

tells me exactly what I already knew about our roster we need to turn about 4-5 of those 3 stars we got every year in to 4 stars.

Under Richt we will always be a top 20 team, regardless of how many stars we accumulate. Stars are for star whores.

There is so much variability in performance that I think it ends up being a wash. Team A has more 7 five stars and 3 four stars, Team B has 3 five stars and 7 four stars. Both 4 and 5 stars are "elite" in terms of athleticism. Some 5 stars will underperform, some 4 stars will overperform. As long as you are in the top 8 in overall recruiting, I don't think that the distribution of 5 stars compared to 4 stars really matters that much.
