Back in March, Guyer High School (Texas) 2017 tight end Brian Polendey visited Miami for junior day and left the weekend as a commitment. Although it was a whirlwind for Polendey, he seems confident that his pledge is solid.
“It was all new to me at first, but looking back on it, there was a lot going on with school and football so I wanted to get it out of the way. I feel like I saw enough to make the right decision,” explained Polendey. “I'm set with Miami. I don't really see the need to look anywhere else.”
His transition from Texas to Florida might end up being a bit easier than initially expected as well.
“My dad actually just got a job in Tampa Bay, so that's where my family is relocating. My parents didn't pressure me at all anyways because it's not hard to hop on a plane and go back home. I had the freedom of choice and from what I saw, Florida was a great place and Miami was an even better city.”
The 6-5, 230-pound tight end will spend his senior year in Texas before he plans to enroll at Miami in January as an early enrollee. Polendey’s future position coach Todd Hartley has made an impression on him.
“The biggest thing about Coach Hartley for me is that he isn't just the tight ends coach, but also the special teams coordinator. I think that takes more education than just coaching two or three game because there's a whole different aspect of the game that he needs to know.”
“I actually got to see him coach in action and that was awesome. I sat down in a meeting with them to watch film too and I love how he runs his ship,” Polendey added.
Hartley and Mark Richt have explained to Polendey how he could potentially be utilized.
“It's not exactly a traditional tight end role. I'll be in the backfield and used as a receiver too, from what they explained to me. I'll be playing wherever they need to know.”
The tempo of the practice that Polendey attended back in March definitely caught his attention.
“I liked the intensity. There wasn't really a break period and they were nonstop going from drill-to-drill.”
Miami's tradition of producing elite tight ends at the NFL level was not necessarily part of the decision process for Polendey, but it is certainly a positive for him.
“It's like the cherry on top. It's Tight End U and one of the best schools in the nation, so I'm excited to have the opportunity to go there,” he said.
