So you can only choose one to be on your hypothetical team. Assuming both in their professional prime (I know ST never really peaked, RIP.) Who will it be and why?

I love both and think that Reed will be an important ambassador for the game down the line but I'll take ST. Better against the run, deadly hitter, maybe not as cerebral as Ed but covers a lot of ground. He can blanket the TE and eliminate anything over the middle and can keep up with your best receiver.

I know i will get killed for this, especially by Larry, but it makes for a great debate.

Taylor's the most gifted safety of all time and Reed's arguably the best safety of all time. It's a freaking miracle we had them both so close together.

If pressed I take Reed.

Reed all the way. Taylor was a unique talent, but Reed can see the field better than possibly any safety in the history of the game (college or pro). Taylor had freakish size and could hit like a monster. Reed takes the ball away from the offense and makes more plays than anyone else. It's unfair to compare anyone to Ed Reed.

Taylor. Very hard choice though because, as you said, we never saw him in his prime.

Sean Taylor, I prefer a knock out artist at the safety spot that makes every receiver think twice about coming over the middle of the field. Ed Reed is a special talent, but my preference is a physical destructive safety.

lol...i love being a Hurricanes fan. we are so spoiled to have this discussion. 2 of the best to ever lace them up at the position...its great to be a miami hurricane!!

that said...Reed is my favorite player ever. He's the best safety to ever play the game. Taylor may have ended up there, but I think it's not even close. Reed in a landslide. Taylor may have went on to have a HOF career, we'll never know. But Reed is a HOFr

If I had to choose between the two, I'm picking Ed Reed every time. Team leaders like him do not come around often. His impact to the game and especially the team, was unparalleled.

Sean Taylor was a physical beast, an intimidator, and a playmaker. Physically, he had no match.

Ed Reed however had a bigger impact as a player and a team leader. Consistently.

Again, Reed was an amazing leader who practically coached us to a MNC and was an incredible playmaker. But people tend to forget that ST was a leader by example and did not have the talent around him in 03 that Reed had the year before yet still single handedly accounted for 2-3 wins (twice against FSU.)

My gut says Reed because he was a more mature player. But that's not fair-- Reed was 24 as a rookie, Taylor died at 25 after making a couple Pro Bowls.

If you go by age, Taylor was on a faster track than Reed at UM and in the pros.

It's Reed by a mile. Taylor was a freak physically, but nowhere near the total package that Reed was.

E. Reed for me. As it's been said, though, we're very fortunate fanbase to even have to make such a choice. Long live Sean Taylor.

Reed's leadership put him over the top, Taylor is arguably my favorite Cane of all-time along with Dan Morgan.

Sean Taylor is the best college safety I've ever seen, but you said pro so I'll take Ed Reed. Ronnie Lott and Ed Reed have their own zip code and none of the other safeties can find it.

Ed Reed. Honestly, I don't even think this is close. In the NFL, he is my first pick OVERALL. Has been since he was a rookie. Last year, I could tell that his body is starting to feel the effects of playing in the league all these years, but he is still the best and smartest player on the field at all times. He is a coach to other players, has consistently been on good teams, makes plays in the clutch (this year against the Patriots and Tom Brady in the playoffs - 3rd down, 4th quarter, last possession for the Patriots, Reed comes up and makes a play and deflect the pass. Patriots punt, Ravens drive down the field and we all know the rest).....Before the start of this year, Chris Carter on ESPN said Ed Reed was done, lost a step, etc. First game of this year against the Steelers, Ben R. challenged Ed Reed and decided to throw to his side of the field and ended up throwing two picks to Ed Reed. For the rest of the year, quarterbacks didn't even throw to his half of the field.

Ask people in the know. Ask people in the league. It's Ed Reed
