Rewatched the 1st quarter in slow motion
1) Tackling on 3rd down was horrendous. Crawford, Tyrone (waits for offensive guys to come to him), & Luther all missed 3rd down tackles that would have ended WF drives.
2) Twice we rushed 5 and played cover 1 man press behind it. 1 resulted in a sack & 1 resulted in a QB tuck and run OOBs for 1 yard
3) Tyrone Cornelius looked awful in 1st quarter. He either has no instincts or is thinking way too much out there. He's got to stop hesitating and just play. His tackling suffers because of this.
4) Dropping Porter into a dog zone coverage was just plain dumb. The play-call wasn't bad, as WF ran an underneath route in the direction of Porter. But Porter had no clue where the ball was (he was spot dropping) and he is not quick on his feet. Would prefer this play called with maybe Luther Robinson, but preferably with McCord or AQM.
5) Highsmith is not D-1 material imo. Not sure where he'd start in the ACC, but to my knowledge he's costs us 2 or 3 TDs this year. Awful angles, can't tackle, looks scared, can't get off blocks (on a 3rd down screen).
6) The DL stunts are very slow developing - our coaches make it a priority to stop QB draws and scrambles this way. And the few times we ran these it did gobble their QB up at LOS. I'd just like to see us stop the stunts on 3rd and long. AQM runs around like a chicken with his head cut-off too often. Specifically in the 2nd quarter, on the deep ball on Artie Burns down the sideline. The play was made possible because AQM stunts inside, leaves the short side of the field wide open for WF to roll their QB out and have all day to throw.

The zone is executed much better this season, no question about that. There weren't a lot of open WRs downfield yesterday. Wake Forest took all the underneath stuff and got YAC. For us to be a great defense (the one I'm assuming Golden & D'Onofrio envision) we HAVE to become great tacklers (ala VT).
And we also need to become more explosive. I saw a lot of CBs carry their men inside, release em to LBs, & then slip or hesitate to get back to the flats for their assignment (TEs, RBs, etc). They showed no explosiveness in closing on ball carriers.
Anywho... when you review the film you see a defense that seems very close to finally making the turn. We're still a safety, MLB, and dominant 1st/2nd down DE away from being elite. Replacing Porter is important as well.
