Rewatched the 1st quarter in slow motion

1) Tackling on 3rd down was horrendous. Crawford, Tyrone (waits for offensive guys to come to him), & Luther all missed 3rd down tackles that would have ended WF drives.

2) Twice we rushed 5 and played cover 1 man press behind it. 1 resulted in a sack & 1 resulted in a QB tuck and run OOBs for 1 yard

3) Tyrone Cornelius looked awful in 1st quarter. He either has no instincts or is thinking way too much out there. He's got to stop hesitating and just play. His tackling suffers because of this.

4) Dropping Porter into a dog zone coverage was just plain dumb. The play-call wasn't bad, as WF ran an underneath route in the direction of Porter. But Porter had no clue where the ball was (he was spot dropping) and he is not quick on his feet. Would prefer this play called with maybe Luther Robinson, but preferably with McCord or AQM.

5) Highsmith is not D-1 material imo. Not sure where he'd start in the ACC, but to my knowledge he's costs us 2 or 3 TDs this year. Awful angles, can't tackle, looks scared, can't get off blocks (on a 3rd down screen).

6) The DL stunts are very slow developing - our coaches make it a priority to stop QB draws and scrambles this way. And the few times we ran these it did gobble their QB up at LOS. I'd just like to see us stop the stunts on 3rd and long. AQM runs around like a chicken with his head cut-off too often. Specifically in the 2nd quarter, on the deep ball on Artie Burns down the sideline. The play was made possible because AQM stunts inside, leaves the short side of the field wide open for WF to roll their QB out and have all day to throw.

The zone is executed much better this season, no question about that. There weren't a lot of open WRs downfield yesterday. Wake Forest took all the underneath stuff and got YAC. For us to be a great defense (the one I'm assuming Golden & D'Onofrio envision) we HAVE to become great tacklers (ala VT).
And we also need to become more explosive. I saw a lot of CBs carry their men inside, release em to LBs, & then slip or hesitate to get back to the flats for their assignment (TEs, RBs, etc). They showed no explosiveness in closing on ball carriers.

Anywho... when you review the film you see a defense that seems very close to finally making the turn. We're still a safety, MLB, and dominant 1st/2nd down DE away from being elite. Replacing Porter is important as well.

7-0
Hard to complain too much

I said this in another thread, we weren't that out of position and clueless as some on here were saying. We make tackles or don't get juked out of our jocks and we're singing a different tune.

We definitely need more explosive players on this team. But I also agree with not complaining about us being 7-0

Enjoy the ride gentleman were over achieving

If by everyone's account next year and '15 we still have highsmiths and TC caliber players playing serious mins for us begin the doom and gloom but right now enjoy it we aren't the 01 canes so stop expecting this week for it to happen

I expect '15 to be the year we see this defense at its best.

rewatched the game last night and agree with all of your observations. lots of missed tackles in the first half.

d'onofrio has gone up to the booth i suppose because he trusts his team a lot more than last year. we've had problems adjusting series to series this year and have made very remarkable and successful adjustments at half time. is it time to bring him downstairs so that we do not have to wait to make adjustments at half time? is there another way of achieving this?

spot dropped robinson also on 4th down conversion before last TD...to your point its actually the right call but the lineman are not playing it well, may want to move chick or someone else inside to try it

One thing I've noticed is that DP seems to be having a down year. Now before you jump on me, I know his stats are good but he's missing a lot of tackles and a lot of his tackles are 10 yards down the field, not 2. His high tackle total seems to be misleading, like Morgan in 97 or 98.

We don't beat UF without Perryman, for that alone he gtes a pass in my book.

Perryman has had a mediocre past 2 games..

I think he comes out like a bull against fsu.
I know everyone expects us to get blown out, but I feel like we're going to shock some people. Like really keep it close and steal the game like we did with Kirby Freeman..

Good eye.

On #4, we actually ran that same drop with Luther later in the game. It was the big 4th down play that everyone blamed Artie for messing up. Luther just drifted. Spot dropping DTs with little to no pass rush is extremely rough. Those guys must feel like they're in outer space.

On #6, I mentioned that in the "What I expect to see vs FSU" thread. Our stunts/games aren't effective right now. Besides playing them for contain, as you noted, they're extremely predictable. Sometimes we've lined up AQM inside. Well, not too hard to figure out he's only in there to loop around a crashing Chick.

What I'd like to see us do against FSU more often is "stemming."

The only thing i disagree is about that play were Artie Burns got beat.... AQM may have allowed the QB to run out the pocket but it's man on man coverage on 3rd and long..... Artie got beat and it was 100% on him. He needs to work on that 1st step and react quicker.

Also I just want to say the open field tackling was a strength earlier in the season but slipped the last couple of games..... they just need to refocus and get that corrected which is what they're doing.

There is no overachieving going on. We are better than every team we played including UF.

We play a reactive defense instead of one that force the offense into what we want them to. It is what it is.

Some of the tackles made in the UF game were incredible. One of the better tackling performances I've seen from this team in years. We need to get back to that. Maybe a little extra motivation from playing our hated rivals is what it takes, just like Florida.

He was there. And, it was a double move. Poorly judged the ball. With his back toward the left sideline, he's taught and is supposed to go up with his right hand. His "long" arm would have tipped that ball away. He's raw right now with the ball in the air, went up with his short arm and voila: smoked. Rather it be a correctable, technical issue than an athletic/physical issue.
