The ACC has released the following statement from commissioner John Swofford on the NCAA's case against Miami:

"We are supportive of Miami's continued efforts to work with the NCAA on bringing resolution to this case. Miami's cooperation throughout this process should be commended and they have self-imposed significant sanctions. They've been forthright and diligent in their efforts to fully cooperate with the NCAA and it's time for this case to be brought to closure."

Shalala's bringing friends to the fight! Having the ACC behind us is HUGE! I'd imagine it ensures having the presidents of all the other ACC schools behind us as well.

I am going on record saying this will be the only time I want to chant "ACC! ACC! ACC!"

FWIW... Swofford brings the "Notre Dame network" of influence into the equation as well.

honestly after the mess that was the ACC CG this year & it looks like for Miami to play FSU again for the ACC CG this year.. the ACC is making **** sure this gets done

I like the statement but don't forget he's got an institutional interest in saying that. It doesnt mean he is lobbying on our behalf, let alne that his friends will go out on a limb for us.

True, but the interests of the ACC and its membership is in having this behind Miami and the conference as a whole. It also is important for Swafford to demonstrate to the membership that the conference will have their backs. There are political reasons for Swafford and his pals to close ranks with Miami, particularly when public opinion gives them cover to do so.

i beg to differ, my point being that Shalala will literally grab him by his balls and make him lobby on our behalf if needed.

It would be in the best interest of the ACC to lobby on our behalf. The ACC brought UM in with the expectation that it would have two teams, UM and FSU, in the national title hunt every year. I'd imagine they still want that to happen. The ACC should be a far better football conference than it is, and all it will really take for that to happen is for UM to once again be playing like UM. It would be in the best interest of the ACC to do what it can to aide in that process.

Is this an unprecedented statement, in so much as, a commissioner calling for closure and not just voicing support for a member?

While that may be true, I don't recall Swofford making a public statement in support of FSU and UNC in the handling of their respective cases, and calling for the NCAA to bring those cases to a rapid close.

This is a good thing. Strange how you're trying to downplay the positives of the past few days.

Swofford understands that the ACC is at risk as long as Miami is weak. The ACC needs UM and FSU competing for championships.

Swofford is a smart man. With the musical chairs that is conference re-alignment these days, he needs to play ball and keep existing conference schools happy. He can't afford to have Miami or anyone else ticked off, so he better have Donna's back. The ACC is in the weakest position of the major conferences as this thing moves towards super conferences. If the ACC were to lose another school or two it could be a house of cards - and Swofford could be without a job.

It's in the best interest of every university to support Miami. They've done everything right with the investigation, but the NCAA continued the witch hunt, even when it was clear the accusations were frequently bogus.

The NCAA got suckered in by Shapiro, just like the investors did.

Ethnic bringing a negative spin to this as well? Who would have thunk it?

We get it.... Donna Shalala sucks and handled this all wrong. Still waiting to know how you would have handled this.
