Welcome to the 1,000 "My take" thread.
I'm happy we got the win. LSU wins 3-4 ugly games like this a year. Not every game can be a blow out. People who are mad we didn't beat this team by 3 TDs need to take their goggles off. Their not as bad as their record indicated. Before the season started you would have expected this team to be 4-1 or 3-2 at worst.
What stood out to me last night no particular order.
1) Tracy Howard kid deserved at least 12 threads! It's ashame 90% of what he does happens off camera. He dominated last night.
2) Artie Burns he is becoming a player and difference maker. That blocked FG was prolly the play of the game. Offense had nothing going and kept us from being down 17-6 at half.
3)Man coverage/ Zone Coverage: First of all we mixed up our coverage alot. I see some ppl who are mad we played Zone and said we didn't play man enough. Go back and look at Tracy Howard's first int that was in man coverage. His second int was in a cover 3. We had some blown assignments and some misscommunication which lead to Ebron running wild in the first half. Second half we dominated.
3) D'nofrio: I'm not mad at him. At some point the players have to execute. Deon Bush who many believe can play Corner as well, was burned badly by a TE off the line of scrimmage. Our Linebackers havent been good in coverage for years. Obviously we have to get these things corrected by FSU. Coach D made great adjustments at half time and we got the win. On another note our run defense has been stellar all year. UNC had nothing going on our front. My only gripe is we didn't play McCord and Muhammad enough.
4) James Coley: He got a little too cute at times in our first 4 Redzone trips, running naked bootleg play actions that didn't fool the defense. Other than that he has this offense clicking and performing at a high level despite the mediocre QB play the last few weeks. I read in another thread someone said we are easy to scheme against? Are you serious we ran every running play in the book last night. We ran Zone running on the outside. We they started clogging those alleys we came back with inside power plays. For the final 13 plays of the game UNC knew we were going to run, we still ran it right down their throats due to the balance of runs called. For years we've watched this Oline and thought how come they look so good on paper but can't open holes in the running game. And finally we see that this group is a Great zone blocking line. Everything starts with that and then we can open up a power game once the defense is forced to change their alignments.
5)Dallas Crawford: A few weeks ago when I compared him to Marion Barber ppl couldn't get past the size difference. It's not about the size of the dog in the fight. It's about the size of the fight in the dog. This guy runs with such amazingly low pad level that he is just hard to bring down for loses in the backfield and in the open field if you are flat footed you will get RUN THE **** OVER! amazing performance for a kid that has worked his butt off.
6) Stephen Morris: This kid...I don't know what has happen to SM. There were times last night I honestly thought he was trying to be Johnny Football. Throwing the ball up into coverage, looking for lucky plays, back foot throws, throws on the run, bad decisions. All stuff that Johnny Football makes look easy. SM has got to be himself. And use his skill set and not try to emulate other guys. He is a rhythm passer with great arm strength who excells in the play action game. When I watch him not he's not even doing a good job selling his play fakes. He is his best when he steps into the pocket not out of it. I just think Morris is trying to do too much, he's not playing his game and he's not making reads. Last night he was locked on WRs for too long and not scanning the field. On two plays when he "dumped" it off to Stacy Coley and I believe Clive Warford those plays went for 12 yards. He's got to trust his play-makers and stop going for "miracle" highlight plays.
7)UTough: This is Al Golden's highest ranked team but if far from the best team he will ever coach. I see his vision of team that plays 4 quarters is mentally and physically tough. I love the way this team swarms to the ball on defense. And last night was the first time in a while that I saw missed tackles. Which I'm confident Al will get corrected.
