We are one week closer to the off-season.
1. Central Florida Knights (9-0, 6-0 AAC) (Last Week: 1)
Last Week: vs Navy Midshipmen (2-8) W 35-24
Next opponent: vs Cincinnati Bearcats (9-1)
UCF picked up yet another win to improve to 9-0 on the year. McKenzie Milton proved once again that he is the best QB in the state, as he threw for 200 yards and two touchdowns while completing 81% of his passes. UCF has a home game against Cincinnati this week as the College GameDay crew stolls into Orlando. This will be a great chance for the Knights to show off in front of a national audience.
2. Florida Gators (7-3, 5-2 SEC) (Last Week: 2)
Last Week: vs South Carolina Gamecocks (5-3) W 35-31
Next opponent: vs Idaho Vandals (4-6)
Florida was able to pull off a come from behind victory over South Carolina. Florida took the pressure off Feleipe Franks in this one by running the ball 59 times, as Jordan Scarlett and Lamical Perine both stepped up to the task and ran for over 100 yards. Florida welcomes in Idaho this week before heading out to Tallahassee to wrap up the regular season.
3. South Florida Bulls (7-3, 3-3 AAC) (Last Week: 3)
Last week: at Cincinnati Bearcats (8-1) L 35-23
Next opponent: at Temple Owls (6-4)
Since starting the year with a 7-0 record, the wheels have fallen off for the Bulls. USF’s loss to Cincinnati marks 3 straight double-digit losses for South Florida. While the Bulls offense did not dominate in this one, the major problem for Charlie Strong is the defense. USF allowed over 200 yards rushing while also allowing two touchdowns through the air. If USF fails to find some semblance of identity on defense, they could easily drop their final two games.
4. Florida Atlantic Owls (5-5, 3-3 CUSA) (Last Week: 5)
Last Week: vs Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (1-9) – W 34-15
Next Opponent: at North Texas Mean Green (7-3)
The Owl’s win over FIU seems to have taken this offense to the next level. For the first time this season, FAU has put together two straight impressive offensive performances. Chris Robinson did exactly what he needed to do, throwing for 231 yards and completing 17/21 passes. The running backs also did their job, with Kerrith Whyte Jr. and Devin Singletary running for a combined 300 yards. Yes, it was against Western Kentucky, but this is the kind of performance we all expected from FAU at the beginning of the year.
5. Miami Hurricanes (5-5, 2-4 ACC) (Last Week: 4)
Last week: at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (5-5) L 27-21
Next opponent: at Virginia Tech Hokies (4-5)
Not one, not two, not three, but four straight losses for the number 8 team in the preseason rankings. I am not going to be ridiculous and expect a new offense to be installed mid-season, but none of the repeating issues from over the past four games have been addressed. Special teams is still awful, the offensive line is still undisciplined and does not know their assignments, and the play calling continues to be juvenile. The list of issues on this team is growing instead of shrinking.
6. Florida International Panthers (7-3, 4-1 CUSA) (Last Week: 6)
Last Week: at UTSA Roadrunners (3-7) W 45-7
Next Opponent: at Charlotte 49ers (4-6)
FIU was able to get back on track against UTSA, with James Morgan throwing for nearly 300 yards and 3 touchdowns. The defense also improved their game, giving up less than 250 yards of offense while also forcing 4 interceptions. In other FIU news, former Miami Central Rocket Anthony Jones was able to get back on the field after being shot back in September. He carried the ball 7 times for 23 yards.
7. Florida State Seminoles (4-6, 2-5 ACC) (Last Week: 7)
Last Week: at Notre Dame Fighting Irish (9-0) L 42-13
Next Opponent: vs Boston College Eagles
FSU continues to struggle on both sides of the ball. Despite James Blackman throwing for 400 yards and 4 touchdowns the week before, Willie Taggart decided to go back to Deondre Francois to the Seminoles matchup with the Fighting Irish. Francois threw for just 216 and completed less than 50% of his passes while also throwing an interception. The running game for the Noles also sputtered as they ran for just 106 yards as a team. To make matters worse, the Seminoles defense gave up over 300 yards on the ground. FSU still plays two more ranked teams this year, so things could get even worse.
