Coach Smith's teams had a different makeup than Rocco and Roger's teams. Coach Smith played a lot of over-achieving kids at strength and semi-strength positions and had some superstars at the skill positions and his teams were grittier. Rocco and now Roger, have way more talent at their disposal, but they don't appear to have as many gritty players as Coach Smith had. Those gritty players formed the backbone of Coach Smith's success, but they've been pushed out by the more talented kids who go there now. Some of the alums who played of Coach Smith will not send their kids to STA at this point.
As I pointed out earlier, those problems might disappear if STA had DECENT QB play. It is amazing to me that a school with that much talent can't find a QB. Compare and contrast STA with AH (which has two excellent HS QBs in Smith (although he can be erratic passing the ball)) and Gibbons (who has a great QB in Scalzo (a Flutie or Johnny Manziel type (without the drug issues)). Those teams are much better on offense and move the sticks consistently. If STA had a QB, it would cover up a lot of the problems.
