Sophomore tackle Tyree St. Louis had mostly been taking reps with Sonny Odogwu as a right tackle during fall camp – until today. St. Louis told media after practice that he was working in with Trevor Darling today as a left tackle as it appears he has emerged as the “next man up” for both tackle positions.

“Coach (Searels) knows I can play right (tackle) so he wants to see if I can play left as well, so now I’m rotating with Trevor Darling,” St. Louis said.

The sophomore tackle said that although he played the position in high school, this was his first time really experimenting with it at Miami.

“It’s a little bit different. I haven’t really touched that position since my senior year of high school – especially against the competition out here. But being able to play both positions is the best thing for me in college.”

St. Louis spoke about battling the defensive line in practice.

“They’re a lot more physical because of Coach Kool. They do a lot more things in terms of twists and blitzes,” said St. Louis.

His thoughts on his position group’s performance in Wednesday night’s scrimmage?

“The offensive line did a lot better in the second scrimmage from the first scrimmage. You can tell by the running backs and how many yards they gained,” he added.

**Redshirt freshman Bar Milo’s transition from tackle to guard has not been easy, but it seems like he is finally getting a hold of things. Milo said he moved to guard “about four days ago”.

“Earlier in training camp, I was having a rough time – I was having mental issues. I went to coach (Searels) and told him and I can’t thank him enough for how patient he’s been with me,” Milo said.

“I haven’t been playing how I wanted to this whole training camp, but I’m starting to get back into that fun, festive mood that I usually get in when I’m on the field.”

“I think going to guard with my frame and having people on both sides of me with experience helps a lot. I feel comfortable so far,” he added.

A source told CanesInSight that Jahair Jones has also been working exclusively as a guard.

Jahair Jones will be working exclusively as a security guard if he doesn't tighten up.
 
What are the technical differences between playing right and left tackle? The practical implication is that the qb can't see if the lt gets beat but I was wondering about how actually playing the position differs.
 
Is this correct?

Tackle: Darling, Odogwu, St. Louis, Knighton, Loftus, Johnson

Guard: Isidora, McDermott, Gauthier, Milo, Jones, Mahoney

Center: Linder, Gall

More athletic speed rushers usually come off that side. Sometimes you're on an island blocking them because they split off so wide. Much better footwork and hand placement required.
 
Just posted about St. Louis earlier today - nice to see Coach Searles taking my opinion into consideration lol

Seriously I hope St. Louis makes the leap because I think physically he has the tools to be a good LT for us. Hopefully sooner than later!
 
Here's the problem the OL is having. They've spent years practicing against a stand up and pursue DL and no this.

Amen. I'm hoping that practicing against a real DL alone will significantly improve this OL unit.

Prefacing each of my posts with "from the little I've seen..."

Our first team OL has looked surprisingly clean in pass pro. I was a bit disappointed with them in the run game, but that may have to do more with just how impressive some of our DL flashed.

I caught St. Louis leaning a bit and wiffing, but otherwise was also fairly solid at RT. I think this experiment at LT is long overdue. He's going to have his hands full across the board, though. From AQM to Joseph Jackson, guys are doing bad things out there and the complexity of Diaz's packages will make guys' heads spin. Nonetheless, I think it's a tremendous sign because it may finally mean they're prepping him to be a legitimate swing tackle and, perhaps, a real LT some day soon.

Well by cis logic the ol looking good in pass pro means our DL sucks and can't get a rush . As for not opening holes in run game? That's because the ol is soft and still suspect.

I'm super concerned , we're in trouble !!

Ha. Fair. I don't think there's much reason to panic. It's on the coaches to get to 9 wins. The talent is there and, given some health, the coaches seem to be doing everything we've hoped for (so the opposite, basically, of what you've recently seen). No excuses.

A lot of guys if only trained to play Right or Left tackle sometimes are very uncomfortable kicking back with the other leg. They aren't as balanced in the kick slide and lose some strength in their punch. Takes some time for some guys to adjust and build up the necessary speed too in the kick slide. Typically lineman are trained to use both legs but now kids are soo specialized that by the time they are in middle they got somebody training them to only play LT smh.
 
Baffling to me that it took about 380 days for this to happen. Better late than never I guess.

There is an opening for a security guard at Hard ROCK Stadium, maybe you could put in a good word for him,

He's just a redshirt sophomore so hopefully the light comes on at some point. I've been tough on the guy so I'd do my best to get him a job at the stadium however I could if/when the time comes.
