Kick coverage needs serious improvement. We’ve recruited enough young dawgs on D that we should be smothering opposing teams on kick coverage. We have the talent to be much better. IMHO, there are not enough of the right assets on the field for these plays. The coaches need to collectively review every players involvement on those units & identify the weak links (and replace them).
If we make a run, we should consider using some more starters on kick coverage (maybe from the ACC Championship game on or the first playoff game on).
We used to dominate in every phase of the game with guys like Robert Bailey & Jessie Armstead smashing the returner as soon as they caught the ball. There were times when we blocked punts fairly often. We were suffocating in every phase of the game. Our O is best in the nation, our D is improving…but our special teams on kick coverage & kick returns has been mid at best all season (and seems to be getting worse). In tight games (like the ones we’ll face the rest of the way), this could really cost us.
Put better players on special teams. Hire Don Soldinger as an Analyst & have him work some magic. Find guys that can block for CJ. All CJ needs is a decent crease to house a return. Yes, he needs to work a little Devin Hester wiggle into his run-backs but it’s hard for me to fathom that he couldn’t have had at least 1-2 gaping holes to run through all season. Need dudes with attitude to really block for him.
Andy is having a great season. Dylan has been really solid too.
