St. Petersburg Catholic running back Ryan Green, a Florida State commitment, will miss the rest of the football season due to a shoulder injury, his father Vader Green told the Times on Thursday afternoon.
"He's done,'' said a distraught Vader Green. "He is really broken up by this. Just really broken up.''
Vader Green said his son, the No. 2-ranked player in Tampa Bay according to the HomeTeam 100 preseason rankings, has a torn labrum, but is unsure when he suffered the injury.
Ryan Green ran last times last week for 196 yards and four touchdowns, and also scored once on a 73-yard pass reception in a win over Sarasota Out-of-Door Academy. He didn't report any injury following that performance.
But he woke up Wednesday morning complaining of soreness in his shoulder. His father said he hadn't complained before, but had tweaked the shoulder in the Barons' preseason team scrimmage.
He took his son to the doctor, and Thursday an MRI confirmed the bad news.
Green, an All-Suncoast first-teamer in 2011 after running for 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns, will have surgery Friday morning, his father said, and expects three to four months of recovery time. He hopes to play basketball this season.
Vader Green said FSU has been notified of the injury and impending surgery.
"He could probably play if he had to, but there's no reason to risk injuring it further or making it worse,'' Vader Green said. "He has his scholarship and we have to think about the future.''
Barons coach Steve Dudley said he knew the injury was serious when Green missed practice this week.
"It's tough," Dudley said. "Ryan was our home run threat. Even more, he was the leader of our team just by the example he set. We have some young guys who we feel can step up, but it's hard not having a player like Ryan in the backfield."
Jaquan Fuller, who ran six times for 69 yards last week, is expected to replace Green at running back for the Barons, who are 1-0 and heading to Crescent City for a game this week.
